I'd load 3.6 gr 231 paying close attention to the OAL per your loading manual.
Just my opinion.
There are all kinds of ways you can harm yourself and/or your guns. The author is not responsible for injury and/or death resulting from this data.

I use 231 and 124gr cast bullets for my 9mm loads. I'm shooting modern handguns, so my loads are near the upper end of the recommended range. As always, it's best to look at data from several reputable sources and start low and work up. Also, be sure that your pistol is safe to fire. If you haven't already, have a gunsmith look it over.

This jives with information in Lee's Modern Reloading book. It shows 3.3 grains of 231 for a 124 grain lead bullet, to a maximum of 4.0 grains. Be careful with that old gun.

4 grains cycles all my nines, and doesn't seem "hot". But ,YES,watch the OAL,it can drive pressure up on a hurry!
