working on new style Single Six and make the mistake of removing main spring how does this monster spring go back in ? don’t really want to buy a compressor.

A simple approach with household items might utilize a fork, a paperclip, and a block of wood to push against. The hole in the spring guide is for keeping the spring in a compressed condition with a paperclip, finishing nail, or pin punch, etc.

3 easy ways to replace hammer spring and spring perch at this site: http://www.cylindersmith.com/Ruger-spring.html

Great tutorial link, thanks for posting it!

I especially like the drill press/vise method, it looks like it would make for en extremely smooth/controlled reassembly... and one I never would have thought up myself!

'bg' welcome to the Forum, by the time one walks over to ANY piece of equipment or elsewhere, the fork or a pair of parallel pliers, OR even simple Sears pliers, and you can put the seat, spring, and a pin in the mainspring strut, faster than it takes to type this all out,,,,,,,,,just gotta do it a couple of times, heck my gunsmith uses his bare fingers to put them together, me, the bench vise is sitting right next to me on the work bench, just gotta lean over, press in between the jaws, drop in the pin...voila
