Rifle cartridge names.

I was ordering brass for my .45 acp.
Happened to scroll over to rifle brass.
Super short magnum extra super duper magnum extreme maximum ultimate magnum improved extra ultra magnum long range westerner
You get the idea.
What about a nice solid .270?
Or a 30-06 to take care of business?

The names they came up with made me laugh.

Yep, marketing. Roy Weatherby sure made a lot of money using the term, Magnum. I remember seeing the name Magnum on a package of condoms. I thought what a marketing genius, figured they sold many just using that name.
On rifle or handgun calibers one can argue if the higher velocity of them is good or bad. Or if the deer/elk notices or reacts differently when hit by a 30 cal. 180gr bullet at 3006 speeds over the same bullet shot at 200 fps faster in a .300 win mag.

Not all of the "long winded" names are recent creations by the marketing pogues. My favorite dates back over a century:

.375 Belted Rimless Magnum Nitro Express

For some reason, I love that name - maybe because it's about as long as the cartridge case! But most folks just call it the .375 H&H...

Oh for Pete's sake. You have to understand that time marches on. Things like the 30-30, 45-70 and all other hyphenated rounds are ancient. They have lost all ability to kill modern game animals.

The same is true of old but not ancient rounds like the mentioned 30 06 or any rounds that are named after people.

My old carcass is more than satisfied with my .308Win M77 rifle and .45Colt Blackhawk for everyday use. I don't need any of those "new fangled" chamberings.

Easy. Take a 338 mag case, neck it to take a .17 bullet. Make is with a double sharp shoulder and have a custom smith cut a barrel blank for your savage 99. And there you go.

I once read that Winchester came out with in1894 .30 WCF (Winchester Center Mag), but when another company came out with the same cartridge, they didn't want everybody referring to Winchester, so they called it the .30-.30, which of course evolved to being called the "thuty, thuty".

Oh heck. I was using a .458 Winchester
instead of a 338.
I am having to use A LOT of case lube.

I like both old and new.

I can hunt one day with my Marlin .45/70 with a low power Nikon scope and the next day enjoy my 6.5prc with a Nightforce illuminated scope.

Next up, I will be putting together a 6mm GT, suppressor, and LPVO.

Getting and trying new stuff is part of the fun of being a rifle nut.

My favorite magnum was always the TSM (Thomas Sullivan Magnum). Not very fast.....just barely faster than the LADS.

Nothing modern at all about an Low Power Variable Optic aside from calling it a LPVO these days. USMC fell for that term hook and sinker a few years back.

Then there is.223 Win Super Short Mag as well as the .25 Win Super Short Magnum. And as another mag there is the 7mm Rem Short Action Ultra Mag

yep and those "Super Duper" cartridges take 20-30% more cannon powder to attain 100-200 fps
