I dealt with an inspector named Marcia. I pronounced her name like Marsha Brady... She came unhinged screaming that her name was Mar-SEE-ah... I didn't call her Marsha Brady but just called her by what I saw on her name tag.My sister (who was a teacher) had a student named "pajama" pronounced "PaJ A Mah"... This still cracks me up!

I had a very similar experience with a Marcia. She would correct anyone who called her Marcia and insist that she be called Mar-see-ah. I worked with her father who explained to me that she was always called Marcia until she became a teenager and decided her name was to be pronounced Mar-see-ah. She had an issue with me because I refused to play into her affectation. I didn’t go out of my way to embarrass her but whenever we spoke privately she was Marcia. Her father always laughed because he had given in many years before just to keep peace in his household.I dealt with an inspector named Marcia. I pronounced her name like Marsha Brady... She came unhinged screaming that her name was Mar-SEE-ah... I didn't call her Marsha Brady but just called her by what I saw on her name tag.
She was terrible to deal with and I found out later that her husband was in prison. She knew that I came from the prison system and treated me like I put him there.
Fortunately my cousin's wife was higher up in the inspection department and I was able to get her to talk to Mar-SEE-ah to tell her to back off.
I can't imagine going through school and some sub-teacher takes attendance and says, is "Ham Berger here today....."Don't forget the prosecutor on Perry Mason. Hamilton Berger.
