If it is anything like a .44 I had it will shoot ok until it gets hot.

On that .44 the bore was .4315. It shot fine Spring and Fall. In the heat of the summer I couldn't finish an 80 round match. After about 30 rounds it required two clicks elevation for every three shots.

To start with, realize that using an under sized bullet always means that proper neck tension can be a problem (particularly with an autoloader). There are however, ways to address that.
Also note that there aint too many .308 bullets which have a crimp-groove and even if they do, the groove may not be in the right place relative to your intended cartridge-AOL....so if having a crimp-groove is a criteria for you, you'll be somewhat limited as to your bullet choices.

All that said;
I know for sure that a .308-125 Nosler Ballistic Tip sitting over a healthy dose of IMR-4227 and a Federal Match Primer worked surprisingly well in the 7.62X39 guns which we tried it in.
On the other end of that mule, a cheap plinking load for a 7.62X39 gun can be worked up using pulled 7.62 NATO-147 FMJBT bullets and H335.

Once again though, it's important do whatever you gotta do to insure proper neck tension.

Hope something here helped.

Jes a thought; you're only talking about .001" on each side of the bullet. I have used .308 bullets in my Mosin Nagant w/.311" groove diameter. Not real accurate, but not dangerous. I got a bit more jacket fouling than my "good fitting" reloads...

Hi,

Did I miss what .310 bore you're using?

I've got an Enfield which slugs out about ".311 and a hair" (5 land rifling makes an accurate measurement difficult with what tools I have.) It shoots .308 jacketed or .309 cast bullets about as well as properly sized ones--anything under 3" at 100 yds is a really good group. ;) As to the neck tension worry, I'm using an older Lee die set: its factory decapping pin is fitted with a .308 sizing button. To size to .311, I have to swap out the pin/button from a 7.62X54r die. Easy enough! I dunno what sizes other mfrs use, but a similar procedure should be possible if required.

Shooting .308 bullets in either of my M44 Mosins is a whole 'nuther story... :oops:

Speer used to list reloading data for their 110 gr plinkers (308) in the 32 mag and said they shot decently accurate.

It works fine. I have a 357/9mm Blackhawk. .358 vs.355. It's not as accurate but gets the job done for plinking. It's only when you go the opposite. .311 in a .308 bore. That's when pressure and other problems can happen.
BTW I use 165 .308 bullets in my 303 British all the time.

Basics; the .308" bullet will be .002" smaller than the groove diameter of a .310" barrel (that's .001" engagement on each side of the bullet). How deep are the grooves in the .310" barrel? What is the bore diameter in the .310" barrel? Many wouldn't be able to tell much difference...
