Too many emails

The other day my wife bought some hair dryer on Amazon. That company, not Amazon, sent me 7 emails and text messages about the order, out for delivery, delivered status.

I have an eye appointment. I called to make the appointment. Got a confirmation email, then a “please confirm email.” Today I get “friendly reminder,” text and email both.

I logged into my toll account for the Texas toll highways. I get an email a day for a week, asking to please review how your experience was.

Same with an oil change, “how was your experience?” And if I don’t do the survey (I never do) I will get reminders asking me to please fill out the survey.

Same of o buy duct tape at Home Depot. Please fill out survey.

It has gotten so far out of hand, I could just cuss.

And yeah, before you say you can opt out of the emails, that is a backwards system.

I should have to opt in to get them. It shouldn’t be forced upon me and then I have to take action to stop it.
I'll give a company (that I opted in for) one week. If they do not "abuse" access to me email address, I don't unsubscribe. Where they really get you is the fine print that basically says "by doing business with us, you agree to receive electronic communication". That one pisses me off, and I have left reviews like "The product is great, but this company will flood you with emails begging for a review>"

Unfortunately, all we can do is unsubscribe... I just wish I could do it for all of the junk mail I still receive.

I think you can blame it all on the DVR....

I hear you.

When I start my day on the computer,, I first go to my emails. I go through,, looking at who/where they came from. BEFORE I open any of them. I just take a moment to check the little box to their left,, and delete a bunch of them.
Then I open the ones I wish to see.
Next,, I go to my SPAM file. I look to see if there are any I need to move to my "in" box.
Otherwise, I click on the little box that checks them all at once. Then I hit delete.
Takes very little time.

But you are rightfully upset at the way they force themselves upon your email.

Blame the geeks AND the FACT that many people nowadays use electronic communication and fail to actually talk to people, or whatever.
I had a customer recently,, who got a bit upset that I didn't take any form of electronic or plastic payments. I explained that I take "Cash or Checks only." It reduces my overhead (time) and I can pass that along to my customers.
Yet,, they were overjoyed that I was able to get to their job quickly & fix their issues.

Penny tells me she starts her day by checking emails.
In her job,, she'll have easily 100+ emails in the morning, awaiting her to check them.
She does the same thing. She scans them before opening, then deletes a crap-load of them w/o opening them.

Such a waste of time.

Then you get old and have appointments for doctors and specialists hospitals and the emails and text messages to do all the paperwork prior to the appointment and you still fill out more paperwork when you check in…. Then afterwords phone calls and texts emails just to see how everything went. Life was great before we had a television…technology! PFFT

what's fry'n my bacon of late with Spectrum are the multiple emails of the same email, i.e. this morning - 18 emails and there were 4 of the same from 4 different companies and 2 others..... arghhhh 🤬

I know! Every morning I go into my email, scan the subjects and senders, and more often than not, choose "Select All" then "Delete".

I wish I could do that for my work email... Hahahaha

now, couple this with how schools communicate, upwards of 6 to 9 different platforms, i.e. you get an email message from 3 different sources, and each one makes you sign in to a totally different web site to see a message which then makes you click on a link which takes you to the main school source - - - efficiency at its finest 💩

Most of my emails are never opened, I just “swipe left”. If you try to unsubscribe you are merely responding and they will now sell your address because they have proof you are a real person. I also report any and all phishing in the hope that Apple will delete their account.

Oh God, don’t get me started on communications from high school.

I’m reminded of that joke. “I had to quit my full time job to have enough time to read emails from my daughter’s high school.”

No in reality, I delete every single email from school without reading. If it’s important my daughter will tell me.

Glad it isn’t just me. 😀

I’m at the eye doctor, on time. After 3 text messages and emails.

Well, you opted in when you agreed to use their online service for your convenience. They didn’t hire a private eye to find your email.

I get scores of spam crap everyday, and unsubscribing to most of them just generates more of the same.

I hear ya, I worked for their predecessor Time Warner for 28-1/2 years and couldn’t stand the marketing they did. In my honest opinion it didn’t do squat but piss off customers that had been with us decades that didn’t get the discounts they offered their neighbors. I left 15 years ago and went to work for a local company. I’m sure glad they don’t have my email but I still get mailers monthly! Worthless company and customer service nowadays!

True, but in this case the hair dryer was bought on Amazon. The company sent their own status updates. I didn’t opt into their systems, just Amazon.

My primary care doc will use the phone, usually two days prior to an appointment. I'm OK with that,

My heart doc, two cancer docs and kidney doc all sent a text message telling me I have an appointment and pse fill out the forms to log in. At the bottom there is a notice the says, "To opt out, send STOP". I send stop and they keep on coming. Now, I just ignore them and delete and they don't say anything. At the cancer place the nice receptionist asks me if there are any change and I say no or if there is one I tell her what is and she makes the change. I almost have the one at the heart doc doing the same thing. My excuse is a valid I'm old and all this new technology confuses the hell out of me. Must be true because every time I tried to use their systen on my phone I always ended up messing it up. I finally said to hell with it.

Last time I had a doctor appointment I got the same thing. Email two weeks ahead of time to confirm my appointment. Another one a week ahead. Another one two days in advance, this time with text messages, press Y to confirm etc. More the day before. Another one that morning. Yet more upon arrival... go to this window, etc.

I go up to the window and told them I'm here. The receptionist looked at me and said "he's on vacation this week."

😖

I used to look over all the emails in my Junk folder, just in case there was one or more that I really needed to read. I stopped doing that awhile ago, and periodically just delete everything in that folder. I have yet to have a case where I deleted something that I needed.

What bugs me are the "reminders" and other email that are sent in addition to text messages and sometimes actual phone calls regarding an upcoming appointment. Often these communications are asking me to fill out all sorts of forms that when ignored, seem to be forgotten. Most of the time when I show up for the actual appointment, I am not asked to answer all of those questions that the emails/texts asked me earlier.

Every morning when I approach my laptop, coffee in hand, I open my Inbox and quickly check many of the emails to highlight them, then I hit the Delete key. Makes life a lot simpler.

I get those before I'm even out of the office sometimes. Reviews and polls ... "How are we doing?"

I often do the same except I discovered if you click select you can scroll down with your finger over the dots and select dozens at at time then hit the trash icon and the all get deleted at once. All the while I scan for anything I want to view and just skip or deselect.

I’ve got a positive view of this issue. At least the plethora of unwanted emails can be dealt with whenever, however you see fit. This is much better than years back when telemarketing was going full tilt.

When there were land lines and answering machines, at least you could screen your calls. Them with mobile phones, for a long time there was no “caller ID” displayed when the phone rang. You never knew who was calling. Now, I don’t answer unless I know the person/place that’s calling.

I miss the days before answering machines when phone calls were for something fairly important. And the responsibility for completing the call was up to the person making the call. Then answering machines came along, and all of a sudden, the responsibility for completing the call became that of the receiver. You had to deal with it whether you wanted to or not. Now, with cell phones, the annoyance is there, right in your pocket. And even if you don’t answer you are left wondering who called you.

I still think the system I came up with years ago would be fantastic. Of course, implementation would be a nightmare. My idea was that every phone call would be a toll call. One dollar charge for every call. It was up to the receiver if they wanted to waive it or not. That way, if a friend calls, it’s not an interruption then there’s no charge. But if it’s a Telemarketer or some other annoyance, they get to pay a dollar for interrupting me.

Did you charge them $25 for not cancelling 24 hours prior?

Don't reply, don't "unsubscribe", just click it as spam and ignore it. Don't give anyone a real email unless you actually want them to email you.
You DON'T have to give anyone your email.
