I went into a Target store exactly once. Many years ago when they opened a store in Asheville. I saw the sporting goods department was bare of things related to the shooting sports, and decided then that they didn't need my business. Never been back.
This "decision" by them was nothing new. They have always opposed freedom. I opposed to giving them my business as well.

Quit shopping there long ago. The fiasco with the personal information being hacked told me I made the right decision. Management was AWOI (Absent With Out Intelligence) back then, and they just certified that label again. Let them pander the Mamby-Pamby's, they have nothing I want...

What they did about guns was answer the complaints of thousands of their customers about open carry in their stores. They DID NOT BAN guns, they asked politely to not have open carry in their stores. They said nothing about CC.
I think in light of the circumstances they took the high road. I know this will enrage certain folks, but so be it.

Groups of fanatics carrying loaded rifles around inside of stores en masse, just because they can. This has taken a toll on the goodwill gun owners used to have with retailers. :shock:
Ah a new story from Newsmax anti-gun advocates were jumping the gun in their rush for power declaring victory, and seems target has had second thoughts.

Gun control advocates may have jumped the gun in praising a request by Target stores that customers leave their weapons at home.
The controversy began with a July 2 web post that was prompted by "questions circulating in recent weeks" about Target's policy on "open carry" laws. In the post, Target's interim chief executive, John Mulligan, said, "Bringing firearms to Target creates an environment that is at odds with the family-friendly shopping and work experience we strive to create" and "we will also respectfully request that guests not bring firearms to Target – even in communities where it is permitted by law."
However, Mulligan added, Target's "approach has always been to follow local laws, and of course, we will continue to do so," which initially raised questions about how or whether the "request" would be enforced.
Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, issued a statement praising Target for recognizing "that moms are a powerful customer base and political force – and you can respect the Second Amendment and the safety of customers at the same time."
The group launched a campaign to get Target to join other stores, such as Starbucks, Chipotle, and Jack in the Box, in asking people to refrain from carrying guns on its premises.
Target's request, however, is not a ban on guns in its stores.
Asked in an interview with The Wire whether customers carrying guns would be told to leave, Molly Snyder, a Target media representative, said that because the store is not prohibiting guns, "we do not plan to communicate with our customers at this time."
Like Target, Chipotle has no plans to actually prohibit customers from carrying weapons in states that allow concealed carry

On Wednesday the manager of a Flint, MI Target said that they are requesting that people not bring any guns in the store and did not mention OC or CC nor did he say long guns or hand guns, he just said guns in general. I could go along with them not wanting people carrying rifles and shotguns around in their store, but when they included handguns i told him we would not be shopping there any more. The fact that they are in effect supporting the moms demand action trash is another good reason not to go there.

I'm sad to say it, but the rabid OC crowd is ruining it for the rest of us.
I feel that we should be able to carry! I strongly support right to carry. I'm aware of the fact many have felt the same way, they are logical 2nd amendment supporters such as myself. I've found that the rabid OC crowd exhibits the same behavioural traits as the "occupy" crowds and are demonstrating and very confrontational. It gives the libtards very good ammunition to utilize in their war on freedom. Please stop feeding the trolls!

Jimbo, this is rare, but I actually agree. Not only do they carry loaded sporting (black "evil") rifles around, but they actively try to get confrontational with anyone approaching them. The YouTube videos make me sick. They make us gun owners look pretty bad. You pretty much hit the nail on the head other than that. I swear I have seen some of these guys in the occupy crowds as well.

As a strong supporter of gun rights,,, I do my best to present a positive impression to anybody I meet when I'm in public.
In NC,, we are allowed both CCW (with a permit,) and open carry.
My clothing dictates how I carry a lot. I wear shorts & T-shirts a lot. I was raised to tuck my shirt in & be neat in appearance. I often use a quick method of carry when I exit my vehicle to enter a store. My belt is a heavy gun belt. I often just tuck my handgun in my waist band on my right hip. It's partially open carry & partially concealed.
I've NEVER had any LEO question me & I get to interact with them a lot. (Just yesterday at lunch I saw one who I knew was LEO, he was off duty & enjoying lunch. We had a good visit, and he saw my handgun, asked what kind it was, & he lifted his shirt to show me his personal choice of off duty firearms.)
I'm also rarely approached by anybody with any comments or questions,,, but when it does happen,, it has been mostly very polite comments or questions.
That said,,, I support both methods of carry.
For decades,, we as gun owners were made to feel as if we were criminals because we wanted to carry guns. In states like NC,,, before CCW was allowed,,, we didn't often see folks carrying open,,, even though it is legal. A good friend was in a store & a woman complained to the store owner, and he called the cops. The LEO's arrived, & were very polite & did not harass him,, but rather explained to the others it was perfectly legal. As gun owners we were browbeaten by the media & all into submitting ourselves to THEIR agenda. (No guns.)
Along came CCW & the anti's screamed loudly.
Their fears haven't had the effect they promised. (Wild west shootouts etc.)
Now that more & more folks have CCW & have been learning the laws, many have found that open carry is legal. So, they have been trying to reverse the years of anti-gun sentiment by doing more open carry.
Unfortunately, the few folks who wish to push a much stronger agenda, are not using good public relations by carrying long arms, en mass. By gathering in groups,, and staging events where they open carry rifles & shotguns, looking for media attention & all, can give anti-gunners fodder to fight us.
It also can make MANY of those people who are either on the fence about guns (or close to the middle on issues,) to go against us.
We can accomplish MUCH more by acting polite, carrying openly & not acting in ANY offensive manner, in any place to where the middle of the road crowd sees us for what we really are. Normal citizens who happen to enjoy carrying our firearms.
But just like the stupid, rabidly anti-gun crowd, (Their fringe bunch that will NEVER accept anything but a total ban,) we gun owners have our own group of people who lean too far the other direction hurting our rights.

I can't help but think the best positive action to open carry of a rifle or shotgun would similar to my uncle when I was a child. A car with Illinois plates was on the side of 114 when my uncle stopped and parked in front of them. My uncle asked them if they had spare tire used a jack from the truck and quickly had the flat changed. The old guy in the car pointed to rifles in the window rack of the pickup and asked my uncle if he always had them. He kind of laughed at the guy and said that he was lucky there was also a jack and a lug wrench in the back all the time too.
