When do you become a target?

When I joined club Odie Green, 'nam had in the rear view for a quite few years but there were still a good number lifers that had done a tour or few left over.

I was full of questions but it was hard to get most of them to open up about their experience, although some were quite braggadocious. My 1st Sergeant once told me "the ones that talk the most, did the least"....

FWIW

When I was a kid (born 1946) almost every male had been in the military during WWII, and many women, too. It was real fresh in everyone's mind. But it was hard to get much detailed information out of them. I think a lot of them wanted to get back to normal 1950s life.

I was around a number of those guys as well. My crew lead had 5 Purple Hearts - wouldn't wear 'em. Top had a Silver Star but you wouldn't know it unless someone else told you.

So let's quit playing around M118LR, What was your job?
It would depend entirely on the tasking. Reconnaissance intelligence collection search and rescue security details interdictions mission planning damage assessment as directed.

Okay, let's get specific. What was your MOS. I know some MOS' had various tasks. But the MOS pretty much tell folks what your job was.

Mine was 57170A when I was discharged. The first thee digit indicate career field, 571 is firefighter. The next to you level, 10-trainee, 30 apprentice, 50 firefighter, 70 supervisor, 90 chief. Additionally, there were locally or job specific prefix and suffix codes used to denote certain qualifications. The only one I am aware of is the one I had, though there were likely others. The A indicated that I was qualified as and airborne firefighter. This meant flying in the HH-43 Husky doing LBR, local base rescue.

This pretty much tells the tale.

Navy doesn't have MOS. Over 3 decades I had many different NEC's.
53XX, 82XX, and 83XX series. Can't get more specific than that. Also had multiple Ratings to match source ratings NEC Specific.

What I can tell you is that I never held a 5326 NEC. Hope that satisfies your curiosity. 😎

So the first has something to do with ship maintenance (53xx), aircraft maintenance (83xx), and the last has something to do whit being aircrew, crew chief, etc. (83xx). And you weren't a SEAL. Why can't you give the last two digits that clarify your specific jobs. The military is all about keeping folks organized and assigned to appropriate duties. That's one of the reason for all these identifiers. It's the way the computers figure out who is going to be assigned where.

Just out of curiosity, after 30 years I take it you retired as an E-9. All I can say about that is Thank you for your service Master Chief.

Nope, did a little Chief Warrant Officer time, but I was a Bad Boy in Somalia, so I reverted back to my Enlisted rate inorder to retire by request of Admiral Lopez ( You retired at the rank you held for 3 years way back then) . Perhaps thrashing an Army Officer in the middle of CIC wasn't the best career move. But the Buff Boys that questioned why all the cell phones in the area continued to function didn't have much of a problem with it. So I finished out my time in Bosnia and Uncle Sam stop gapped me while I was there.

You lost on Jeopardy. You may have to look up Wired Al on your own

53XX didn't have much to do with ship maintenance, ( although I was a BM then) those NEC's belonged to Classified NSW Folks in my time. Along with the specific 82XX and 83XX NEC's I held. But nothing in the Non Disclosure Agreements says I can't tell you on open air what I wasn't. So you got 1 out of 3.

Uncle Sam says 2 out of 3 ain't bad?

Meatloaf was praying for the end of time By the light of the dashboard. 😂

Do you feel better informed than you did before? Or are you still groping in the dark?
It may seem like a stretch, but all that secrecy does have something to do with keeping my family and I from becoming a Target.

I have a man bag as well... It is green and almost too tactical. I have an old leather fanny pack that is black that I haven't worn in a long time. Maybe I should dig that out and see if it still fits.
Line mine?
I carry it slung over the shoulder when we travel - plus an LCP in my strongside pocket.

Am 81 and overweight, so I like to be more aware of the surroundings.

I really don't want to get too close to anyone...Anything can be a weapon. I once saw a lady run out of a building man chasing her. Coldcocked her. She had been carrying her shoes. When he grabbed her again she came up with a shoe a 4 inch high heeled shoe. Stuck that thing in the top of his head...went down like a steer getting hit in the head with a sledge hammer.. My medic...the master of understatements said...matter of factly...damn I'll bet that hurt. I know it was a 4 inch heel. I taped the other to him so they knew what they were dealing with at the hospital when they took it out. we were the witnesses for the woman at the arraignment.. The guy did live kinda sorta...that's why I don't like close and personal
