I have a 3.750 length Barrel BH single six ( looks like a small Vaquero) but is Single Six on frame.
What would the proper front sight height be for something like this?
Is there a formula?
It is a 32 caliber , I would rather cut one to fit close before installing so I don't have to file or polish later.
Thanks
Ron

not sure of any "formula" all I know is that in the past we had to ask for the "shorter barrel" for whichever caliber gun ( model) and even then the parts people would get it wrong,,,,shorter barrel, taller front sight blade, or in the case of the Single Sixes, ask for the 32 H&R Mag sights, they were usually the tallest,,,have NONE here to be able to measure, get a gun and measure it?????
it is easier with the screw on sight bodies, as to the "MINI " Vaquero ( Vaquerito) is that a soldered on like the original "older" Vaqueros ??? ( NO I did NOT say OLD MODEL VAQUERO..... 8)

that being said, yours SHOULD be the tallest they made......

Ruger Guy Thanks
I have messed with the Idea to use a soldered on base like the SS Blackhawk has (had ) if I could find one they had a pinned blade. I could change blades and modify blades on the bench and install.
What Blackhawks had those pinned in blade bases?
Ron

I seem to recall they started to use the "pinned" blade bases for the stainless steel Blackhawk version guns, the base was stainless and the blade actually blued...so had to be pinned

the stainless Super Single Sixes the front sight was all black, and a screw on...one piece sight

Measure the sight radius on your handgun (distance from rear sight to front sight).

Assume a target distance of 25 yards (which is 900 inches). Divide your sight radius by 900. Example: a Ruger Vaquero with a 5.5" barrel will have a 7.5" sight radius. 7.5/900= .008". So .... each .008" of sight height will change the bullet's point of impact by 1" at 25 yards. Let's say your Vaquero was shooting 4" low at 25 yards. That means you can file off (4x.008" = .032") about .032" from the front sight to register the sights for your particular load.

If you use a Ruger target front sight with the base, it'll be plenty tall (way too tall) for the fixed rear sight on your Vaquerito.

It's too tall even for the single six with windage adjustable only rear sight. Here's mine with 3 1/2" barrel and filed down front sight:

Thanks Jim, knew there had to be an answer.. Mine is a .32 with a 3.75 ( to the cylinder) I have been thinking of making the sight like yours but stainless and blue mine is the Vaquero looking BH 32 single six.
What is the sight overall height of the one on you 22 , from top of barrel?
give me and idea of the ballpark to start in.
Also Jim I sent you a PM last week about the triggers and hammers on the 1/2 cock old models last week, I did the tig bump on the SBH hammer back in May but have not finished up on it yet.
Look in your messages for the message I sent you and you can let me know about your sight height in the PMs.
Thanks
Ron

It measures .322" from the barrel.

My sight is for a 22, the 32 will need to be higher.

My 32 Single Six Magnum with a 4 1/4" barrel I cut from a 4 5/8" barrel uses the original 32 sight which measures .444" from the barrel. It works well in the mid range of the rear adjustable sight, and I still have up and down adjustment.

Why do you want to change the sight on your 32 Vaquerito? Does it not shoot to point of aim with the factory front blade?
If it shoots a little high, just file the rear notch a bit deeper. If it shoots low, just file a bit off the front blade.

If you want a front sight with a base and pinned in blade, you can buy the stainless base from Ruger and a blue front blade with a pin (they'll send you those free, any parts under $20). You'll have to mill the notch in the base and drill the pin hole.

It was a long barrel and I cut it to 3.750 barrel so the sight needed changing ( don't have one now) and wanted to get close on the first try. I cut the ejector housing down to length , made a new colt crescent
thumb piece,( not the wimpy Ruger one) added a BM John Wayne pin. relived the back side of the thumb piece for more case ejection, cleaned up the forcing cone a bit and put a 90 & 45 degree crown on the muzzle.
Trying to do something about that Plow handle Hammer now.
Making some African blackwood grips for it to match the other OM Vaqueros I have.
Make my own grip escutcheons for SS screw and a grip spacer thimble for the inside of the grip frames.
