As I mentioned,, a Jr/Sr Prom was a way to try & expose kids to a formal type of environment. That has changed for sure.
My Dad had a school prior to WWII,, where he taught "Dance, Charm & Manners" so I was raised to be able to go to any function & be social.
BTW; my avatar picture is my Dad & his dance partner. He was a profession dance competitor as well.
So,, I did attend both of my HS Proms. And the girls I was dating at that time,, were attending other schools,,,, so I got to attend their proms. That was 3 different girls in a 2 year timeframe. Then, during part of my Army time,, I was dating a girl,, that I was able to attend both of her Proms. One,, I attended in uniform.
And of course,, several years later,, my g/f & I went to different Proms with me taking his g/f,, and she going with her brother. We all went to a nice dinner prior & later met afterwards to "swap back" our "dates."
Now,, her brother & I were good friends,, and his g/f was also close to us both. And we all were dancers,, so at the Proms,, we tore up the dance floors. Lots of compliments from the "peers."
Part of the 7 Proms I attended that I always felt was very important was to be capable of going to an upscale restaurant, and know how to act, & dine. Dad had schooled us well. One time,, the hostess came up to us & complimented us on how we were. She said she'd had worked there during many Prom seasons,, AND saw a lot of different things. She said it was obvious that we were NOT like most.
And the same g/f & I along with her brother & his g/f,, as well as 2 other couples went to that same restaurant a few years later. All 8 of us had been used to going to a dance hall every Sat night,, but the place started closing for the winter. So we all decided to go to dinner together. This restaurant had a dinner band,, and a small dance floor. At one point,, the band played a song that all of us knew we could dance a "routine" together to. We all hit the dance floor. After the song ended,, the rest of the diners applauded us,, and the hostess came over & asked us; "Do y'all do that often?" And to thank us,, she brought us a bottle of champagne. Everybody seemed to enjoy our dancing. We were also invited back.
But I also know many people are not comfortable in crowds, or in certain settings. As such,, do not go to such places. I wasn't a jock in school, nor even part of the "popular" groups. I didn't care,, I enjoyed myself in many other places & environments.
Since I wasn't all hung up on HS,, or most of the people there,, I've never attended any HS reunions.
So I smile often at people who look at me & see a "barefoot hillbilly" knowing that I can also dress up & go to ANY event, no matter how formal. And yes, I have surprised many a person by doing just that.
I wish they would go back to promoting what a Prom USED to be about.
