I HATE THE 30-06

Seriously... I'm pretty fond of the .30-06 . But, ammo has been scarce. Enter the .308 . Ammo has been far more available, and much cheaper.
The lesson to me is, own them all. :lol:
I've seen .350 Legend ammo available too. Just maybe I oughta own one of those, too. :wink:

I used a 30/06 for everything until I discovered there are more efficient(and lower recoil) ways to kill deer and coyotes. I still have the last 'target rifle' I had built. It's a 13# 30/06 that will gnaw the center out of targets at 400 yards. Recoil isn't too bad but it needs wheels and a hitch to move it around-the barrel alone weighs as much as some rifles.
One of the few guns still on my list is an '03 Springfield... which is what my late father carried back in 1950 as a recon Marine.
I thought he was stretching the truth a bit when he said a BAR would shoot through a concrete block wall until I gave him a M1 for his 80th birthday and we took it out and put a target on an oak tree about a hundred yards away... not only did the full metal jacket rounds go clean through that 12" thick oak tree but they then went through another one directly behind it.

The caliber is a fun one. Loading from 95 grain to 220 grain, tuned to the rifle it's like shooting a .22 to a magnum. Granted, you got to learn those trajectories and shoot accordingly.

Sadly,,, I currently don't have a 30-06 in my small battery of rifles. It's NOT that I dislike the caliber etc,, it's just that my last one was wanted badly by a gentleman who had a nice Ruger SA to swap towards it.
The 30-06 is a solid, time proven caliber,, ! And while many calibers can do similar jobs,, it's one of those that, like so many other things,, (such as a 1911, or the 45 Colt,) will never fade away.
And the case is a "parent case" for several other fine calibers.

Yep I had a factory custom 1957 Model 70 ( The Rifleman's Rifle) in 06, but someone wanted it real bad. Since I don't hunt and have a M1 Garand it went away.

Never owned a 30-06, do have couple 270s, 300WinMag, 300WSM, several 308s, 7-08, 375H&H, 416 Rigby.

My "go to" rifle is my 300 Win Mag=killed ground squirrels to trophy elk. Used it for guiding pigs.
However, my "survival" rifle is a 1917 Enfield in 30-06.

I have 30-06's in a bolt, 2 levers (win. 95's), auto, pump. Everything but a single shot. I don't hate it!

When I sold my 9 - M1 Garrands I had no need for all the ammo I stockpiled and sold that too. Then an International No1 arrived in 30-06 and I had to buy more brass and dies again.

I'm not much of a hand with a rifle, so can't really sympathize with you. I do have a couple of .30-30s but they are more of a wall ornament that practical. I did dearly love my M-1 Rifle during my Army days.

I bought a stainless M77 mkII when they first came out and swapped the boat paddle stock for a nice take off walnut stock off a blued model. Put a cheap Bushnell scope on it and my first hand load with ballistic tips would shoot 100 yard groups all touching. I stopped load development at that point and vowed never to sell the rifle. I have now hunted everything from coyotes to elk with it and it's still just as accurate. I did add a .243 for varmint hunting a few years ago but didn't really need it. I " waste " my gun money on revolvers, 1911s and fancy shotguns and recently a couple cowboy rifles. For most any hunting chores it's sure nice to just have a nice accurate 06!
I bought a Savage bolt action 30-06 a few years back and it has a light composite stock on it... I thought the M1 kicked.... that baby will make you take notice. Then I bought a Gibbs bolt action from Ron in PA here last year.... that puppy has a 2lb trigger with absolutely no creep.... put put the cross hairs on the target and touch the trigger and it goes BAM!

I have to admit the 30-06 is one of my favorite caliber rifles. The reason for that is they are so efficient, and the recoil (to me) is very moderate. It's also adequate for a multitude game, being able to use bullets from 55 grain to 250 grain bullets. That range of bullets makes the caliber adequate with a broad spectrum of game. In spite of all that, there are a large number of calibers that can be used with all kinds of game. In spite of that, and inspite of the fact that anyone with a 30-06 has a rifle capable of handling any game on the continent. In addition, gun nuts, like guns, and they like multiple calibers. One of my favorites as a resident of Alaska for 33 years is the 338 WM, and another is the 375 H&H. I can also make a case for why someone should have a 223, a 243, a 25-06, a 270 (can't believe I said that) or even a 280, and plenty more calibers in the metric category. I buy rifles because I also like I like a mixture of rifles.
As protoolman says I also have multiple Stainless MKII rifles with the Zytel stocks, because they are so effective in snowy weather and rain. I also like shooting a lever action rifle to chase a deer, because it takes me back to the "good old days" and if I lived back east I'm sure I'd also have to have pump action rifles, semi-auto action rifles, and any excuse I need to justify the rifle that just caught my eye. If you can't come up with an excuse for what ever catches your eye, definitely needs more practice with their explanations.

I bought a .30-06 back in '89. I didn't know much about rifle calibers but & had done very little hunting. I went with .30-06 because it was what the majority of older men I worked with used. So I bought an inexpensive Winchester model 70 Ranger (the push feed that is not particularly liked by most). I am guilty of being an on again off again deer hunter depending on what else is going on in life & it has never let me down. I have never felt the need for another deer rifle.

I shot my first buck with a Remington 721 chambered in 30-06 60 years ago. Since then I have always owned an ‘06. In my opinion you are ready to go with one rifle for all your hunting needs if it is an ‘06.
Remember the early 80's (maybe late 70's) and the Remington .30-06 Accelerator® cartridges? They were known for tumbling before making it 100 yards. My first '06 was a 742 BDL Woodsmaster with a Charles Daly 3 x 9 wide angle scope. I still consider it one my favorite of all time. But I was at a gunshop one day back in the 90's, and the gunsmith rack had several of them waiting to be repaired. I asked what the problem was, and the owner had the gunsmith come talk to me. Seems after a few years, Remington no longer made parts for them, and they were all there with the same issue (something about an ejection piece that was breaking after years of use. I told him my 742 still looked like new and operated excellent, and he said he would advise selling it. He said some of those rifles had been there for months waiting on him to locate the replacement part. So I sold mine and bought a 700 '06. I hated the plastic stock and sold it a couple years later. Now I hunt with my early 70's 788 .308 but I will always love the '06.
Almost all my hunting was done with my Springfield '03 that was customized with a hand saw... then sent to professional for bolt bending, new safety and scope mount for my Leupold 1-5x.... Finally gave it to my god-son in Ga. and it continues to hunt hopefully for several more generations. Never felt the need for anything bigger than an '06 . That gun had no problem holding 1" and often a tad less at 100 yds.

Recently discussing my newest purchase a, 375hh with a friend who also has one. Made the comment all the needed rifle calibers were designed before 1920. All after that are just extra fun to own and shoot. I somewhat agree, lots to pick from since then and not many I consider bad just different.

My old sporterized O3-A3 Remington .30-06 made in 1942 is the cheapest gun in my safe and the best shooting.
I wasn't looking for one but I was at the Shriners Alcazar gun show in Montgomery, AL late on a Sunday afternoon back in 2000 and the old gunsmith that had the gun kept on until he made me a deal I couldn't refuse. He did a really good job on the gun. Put a new Douglas barrel on it, a really good blue job, had some Redfield scope rings on it. He hand carved the stock, jeweled the bolt and trigger. It's no hack job he knew what he was doing.
