No vent hole, so the gas comes out in huge burps. "Child proof locks" on the filler cap. "Safety" devices on the filler tube that require impossible positions. Finally: the absurd cost for all these "improvements".
Spill more gas now than I ever did with the old ones. Ahhhh, progress!

on you tube I saw a thread about universal replacements spouts, that included a vent that you drilled a hole for.

IIRC, they were available at Tractor Supply, and I suspect from other sources too.

Yea I agree another "green Item " brought to us by the likes of Al Gore . What about all the gas you spill on the ground trying to operate this valve ...its going into the water table as opposed to the atmosphere ! whooopeee

I just drill a hole in the back-top of the can and plug it with a sheet metal screw. Take the screw out when you want to pour gas. These government regulations on gas cans are terrible.

I had the same rant a couple of years back ..... soon found out I wasn't alone as these are available everywhere.

When I was kid, every farm pickup had a bed packed with "re-purposed" 5 gallon oil cans. Then there were portable tanks with pumps(still heavily used but now most equipment is diesel). Now most of the gas transporters are homeowners and they tend to haul the containers in things like SUV's. Safety is an issue, hence the various features which many of us have come to hate. I haul 91 octane gas for my UTV and chainsaw mixes but do so with a pickup and cans with old style spouts. Generally, I don't use the spouts at all. I remove the spout and pour into a funnel.

:( The disgust for the new and improved government mandated gas cans is pretty much universal, and has been since they first came out. Naturally, the price for a new gas can is much more than they were previously. Many ideas on You Tube on how to fix them.

I have also started using a large "Farm" funnel. You have to be careful not to tip it, BUT it will handle it real fast coming in. YOU will overfill something if you don't give it a gulp, and wait, look down hole for a level, and add more if needed.

Move to the metal safety cans with the supplied funnel. More money but no aggravation! We have to carry them in the work vehicles and I use them around home now too instead of dealing with that crap they call gas cans now...

That is the one I use, bought 4 of them for all my new gas cans.

Expensive but for the new can this one works real slick.

A 2.5 gal can runs about 25 to 30 bucks most ace hardware stores stock them. Push the button for steady stream no burping or splashing near instant shutoff when you release the button. Only new style can that I like. Have old ones that work. But nice to have something that won't spill when I need to haul it in the back of my SUV.

...besides the non-flexable 'glug-glug' spouts, no vents and child proof caps the new cans are required to have a self closing flapper or pour valve.

I found this interesting. (I hope nobody thinks I'm TROLLING because I posted this information)

Q: Who monitors the regulations for portable fuel containers?

A: The Industry receives oversight from a variety of sources. Portable consumer fuel containers are expected to meet federal and state statutes, EPA regulations, and ASTM International (ASTM) standards. The products of the portable consumer fuel container industry are overseen by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The CPSC works with various industries to develop rules or standards the industry must meet. There is also a subcommittee of ASTM International (ASTM) specifically for portable consumer fuel containers. This subcommittee works to create voluntary product standards for the industry. Additionally, portable consumer fuel containers are regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB).

Interesting indeed. But what I DON'T see there are any specific federal laws concerning the "safety cans/spouts". All that link is to is an "organization" of manufacturers of gas cans that agree to make their stuff to a set of "regulations" that the members agree to abide by . . . sorta like SAAMI in the guns and ammo field.

They refer to "oversight" by various federal "departments" but I still don't see any REQUIREMENTS from the legal departments.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but it all looks like a marketing scam to me.

JMHO

Craigs list..."offroad motorcycle gas cans" and you may get a pleasant surprise...I got 5 nice clean ones (the big bottle type with the straight vented dump for $5 each)....garage sales are another place if you just dig in and make the effort.

I agree, I got tired of it and bought a 5 gallon metal can that has a plastic nozzle that attaches to the can. It pours out as fast as you want to pour it. The price of the new green plastic cans is ridiculous. The metal can was 30-35.00 but it will outlast me if I take care of it. The best part I found it on Amazon and got it in 2 days w/ free shipping.
