Fitting Single Six Cylinder

My NM Single Six is missing the .22lr cylinder; if I can come up with another cylinder that has an overall length that is a bit longer than the mag cylinder I have, can the front hub/nose be sanded/filed down a touch to fit, or would it be better to look for a cylinder that is closer to the length of what I've got?

welcome to the Forum,. yes, it alll depends on how much you really have to take off, so so slowly,take your time and keep things "square"... file, paper, surface grinder, name your poison,it may NOT take much at all,some guys even "lap" them in ......

Thanks. How do I make sure it's timed right? Is it common for swapped cylinders to not lock up, or be out of time?

In the vast majority of cases the "replacement" cylinder works QUITE WELL.

Yes, you can simply "sand down" the face of the cylinder's bushing so it fits in your Single-Six. Make sure the cylinder does not bind at all! Ruger fits their cylinders "loose", especially on the .22's, so the powder fouling doesn't gum up the works.

Sanding down the face of the cylinder needs to utilize some precision or an "unsquare" situation will arise. The proper way is to rig up some sort of device that'll keep the cylinder at a perfect 90° angle from the "lapping" table or emery paper on a flat surface. The "pro's" use a machined piece of tubing that just fits the outside of the cylinder and the combination is the pushed/pulled, in a circular fashion, across the abrasive. Lap a few strokes and test the fit. Continue until the cylinder, cleaned up, fits the gun and spins kinda freely.
