Weather gripe

Mobuck and I are about to get slammed. Seems like northern MO and west Central IL are in the heart of the worst due tonight and tomorrow. I think Vito and Watchman are too far north to get the bad stuff.

As usual, forecasts are all over the place. Depending on which weather-guesser you hear we're due for 1/3 inch of freezing rain followed by 8 to 15 inches of snow ~ or no freezing rain and 5 to 8 inches of snow.

Oh heck. Get the extra blankets and stay bundled. I lived through a few ice storms back in New York years ago. Dangerous stuff.

Here in Kentucky the population is in full panic mode! Went to grocery this morning and they were out of tons of stuff. People here freak out if they predict an inch of snow, let alone anything major.

I got out of Baltimore yesterday early because of the panic. Was afraid the beltway would be jammed. Didn't see a flake until I got to Westminster 45 mins later....by the time I got to PA another 45 min later it was white out condition heading into Ski Liberty Resort area. Went into the pharmacy covered in wet snow. By the time I walked out it was sunny. Drove a couple miles home. An hour later it was white out again, but only spit a couple inches that stuck. Wind blew it away last night for the most part. More panic amongst the Baltimore folks about tomorrow night so I'm already planning on staying home up here in the hills of Gburg. Calling for up to 8 inches here, but no panic....just frustration as it brings in all the ski traffic. Folks here don't panic buy bread and eggs we panic buy beer and bourbon because the ski tourists buy it all up fast!

My club's indoor range is open 24/7. It has a nice furnace. The road and parking lot are plowed constantly.

I love Winter. I have to cut the grass every 5 days in the Summer. Show blowing is only maybe once a week and it doesn't take as long. With the advent of 4WD cars, pffffft, driving is a joy.

When you tell people you live in Buffalo, NY, they SCREAM. Hahaha, we don't have a traffic problem at all. Plus, if you live 12 miles north of the city, our snow is only a few inches.

What I always tell people that complain about the weather, why don't you move to where the weather is good?

You know this thread points out one of the bad things about living by the beach in SoCal. I probably have to reload more ammunition since I can shoot easily all year long. I mean, here it is the fourth day of January and our expected high is to be in the mid 60's. And then only because we are getting the tail end of an Alaskan storm.

Were I planning on shooting today I might just choose an indoor range because of the low temps. We won't get into snow removal.

When stationed at Miramar I wasn't "by the beach" but not too far. It snowed a few times when I was there, specifically Poway and Lakeside. Almost a whopping inch and folks panicked. A bit further, in Julian there were a couple snow storms that dumped several inches pretty darn quick. And once while hunting outside Alpine we woke up and were dang near snowed in. All was very welcome to this east coast boy.

Biggest immediate hazard for us is ice; they're talking about up to a half-inch of ice plus 2-4 inches of sleet/snow mix. I am concerned about the power, especially on Sunday when the worst of the icing is supposed to occur. And the bottom is going to fall out of temps starting Sunday night with that good old Arctic blast incoming behind the storm.

Everything north of the Lake of the Ozarks and east of Columbia/Jefferson City is already covered over; they say KC and central/eastern Kansas are already a mess.

Biggest worry I have . . . I somehow jacked up my right knee and find it difficult enough to walk on dry pavement and climb stairs. Soft-tissue injury to my meniscus, the doc thinks; I have an upcoming appointment with a orthopedist. And I live in a second-floor apartment. Glad I laid in plenty of salt . . . Not looking forward to digging out, though. Gah.

My wife went to the supermarket this morning and she said it was a circus.
Working on my snowblower carb today. So little snow in the last few years it gummed up solid. I got it apart and cleaned it. Will put it together tomorrow and with some fresh gas maybe it will run. I know I had all fall to work on it but what fun would that be.

Our high temperature for the next few days is right now. The wind is 25-40 and it's supposed to drop from 49 to 18 in the next few hours. Colder elsewhere I know but this is Texas. Monday AM the windchill is going to be 1 degree.

Well, a little snow makes it harder for the deer to hide from the murderer and easier blood trail tracking for the murderer ......I miss being a murderer.

They said yesterday it was to start around noon, then 3 pm, then 830 pm, then 11 LOL.

It IS snowing pretty good just now so time will tell. Hope they’re wrong yet again.

I just had an episode of thundersleet at the Lake of the Ozarks. Judging from the Bradford pear tree outside my apartment window, it looks like a couple-tenths of an inch of ice overnight under what now looks like an inch or so of sleet/snow mix. Ground's solidly covered, anyway. So's what I can see of US 54 from my apartment window.

Hoping we're done with the icing part. Partly because I'm worried about losing power, and partly because I'm worried about the creaky old mulberry tree in Mom's back yard. The last major ice storm about a decade ago took down about half the branches, but it somehow survived. Not sure it can survive another.

Might go out this afternoon to run the car for a bit and clean off the ice, if there's a break in the weather.

Hah!!!
It’s been over 3 months since Helene destroyed our area and we are still having many problems. Our internet has gone out again Friday and is still down. Plus our roads still have many places that will be closed for months if not years. And some of the places that were built in washed out areas have washed away again about a week ago.
Weather??? We’re going to have residual effects for a long time.
There is still a huge amount of debris to be removed all across WNC.
Lake Lure is still brown in color due to the contamination and such. Our 2025 spring and summer activities will be canceled for this area. And the town of Chimney Rock is most likely be closed all of 2025.
Give me a snow storm anytime over the type of flooding that we had.
