Trying to decide GP100 or ?

Looking into getting a new GP100....Can't decide between a 3in with fixed sights or a 4inch with Adj.

My LGS has both..same price..I already own a Security Six ,Police Six both stainless with 4 inch barrels and a Stainless Speed Six with a 2 3/4 inch barrel...all 357 mag
I also own a Dan Wesson 3 3/4 inch Barrel and a Taurus 66 7 Shot with a four inch barrel and a Charter Mag Pug with a 2 1/4 inch barrel SS in 357..

I'm not 357 Mag poor with 6 in my safe...I'm leaning toward a GP100 with the 3 inch barrel..a fine looking weapon (except for those awful grips)

So if you guyss could comment on your preference I'd appreciate the input..

Leave the concealment part to summtin smaller like a SP101 or your speed six.

This 1 has become my favorite !

I own both and shoot both. Depends on what you're after. As GP100 said if for range work or the like the 4" would work best and reserve CCW for an SP. As for the 3"...it makes a nice night stand weapon and like GP100 I switched all mine out to the old style Lett grips. Sorry I'm not much help.

I just saw the new ruger gp100 competition model. you might want to consider it. Personally I like my six's but if I were in your situation. Looking to add something new to the stable this looks like a keeper.

I tend to favor the 3" GP's. They balance better for me and carry easier. I don't particularly like the full underlug. It is just excess weight as far as I am concerned. The adjustable sights of the 4" model are a plus if you switch back and forth between .38 and .357. Holsters are easier to come by for the 4", but a cheap Fobus does the trick for me with the 3" guns. All of mine have the old Pachmayr Compacs on them. Ruger and S&W both use too many Hogue grips to suit my taste. If it were up to me, I would check both of them out and buy the one that had the tighter lock-up.

Everything else being equal, I'd prefer the 3". But unless you can find an adjustable sight 3", I'd choose the 4" just for the adjustable sights, unless you could get lucky enough to find a fixed sight specimen that the sights were naturally correct for you and the load you're using. In the old days, most fixed sights worked for me. Now days, almost none are correct for me.

I've found that fixed sights are always a crap shoot. If they happen to print where you look with the load you shoot at the distance you shoot, consider yourself lucky. If not, you have no way to correct them. Their only advantage is strength and the fact they work adequately at short range. For anything else, adjustable sights are plenty strong and far more versatile.

If you carry the GP IWB the extra inch of barrel shouldn't make it too much more difficult to conceal. I do it in the winter. The bulk of the frame is what hurts me in the summer with the 4" gun. If you carry OWB, the extra inch definitely makes a difference.

But, from your list of guns, it looks like you should have the expertise to make the decision. After I bought my GP, SP, and Single Six, I've had everything so well covered that I haven't felt the need to gain more experience with new purchases.

Pretty much my thoughts as well. If my 3" had adjustable sights, it would be pretty much perfect in my mind.

My fixed sight 3" GP is regulated just perfect with my 158 gr. load that is in the mid range of load tables. It shoots exactly to the top of the front sight at 30'. I would think that most would shoot the same.
I own GP`s in 3", 4" and 6" and will probably just have to have one of the new competition ones too.
I am still looking for a .38 Special. and wish they would come out with a target model in Special with a 5" or 6" barrel and adjustable sights.

Hi,

I have a 3" fixed sight (blue!), while a couple of friends have 4" SS adj. sight models. For me, a 4" is still on "the wish list." For them, it's not too likely they'll ever own another revolver, and unless either moves from CA, carry isn't that much of a consideration, so the 4" seems a better choice for an all 'round piece. And if I knew I could only have one, I think I'd have gone the 4" myself.
