three screw guns?

I was just pondering the thought of actually seeing a three screw pistol laying on the shelf in a shop, i dont recall ever seeing one as much as i loaf between the three shops that i frequent, all three shops are large and have a lot of traffic, but never a three screw. Are they really that scarce?

There are thousands upon thousands of 'em out there. Some are very common, others not so much. Finding the right one is the trick!

The oldest ruger i have seen was at a local gun show, dont remember what it was other than it had a flat loading gate, think it might have been a 22, i remember asking the guy about it but never picked it up. Believe he said it was a early 50's model, it was worth more to him than it was to me. That happened before i had my first single action, since then i have acquired a NM blackhawk in 45lc, and a NM Super blackhawk 44mag, had a liberty SBH and a single six both were traded or sold for some other had to have at the time, but i really want to add a old model to my few, they just dont seem to be around my area, oh well I reckon I'll run across one when i least expect it and when i aint got the funds to get it :roll:

A year or so ago, I was in my local Gun/pawn shop and they had about 4 of the OM single sixes; If I remember right at least one was a flat gate OM; Sad part was I didn't have the money to buy one of them.

yes, MOST folks do NOT "see" the 3 screws versus the 'pins' (new models) like niot seeing the trees in any given forest.......once you 'know' and LOOK for the "3 screws" they stand out to you,just like the serial numbers, you can and will 'develope' a 'feel/see/ taste' for the old models, and be able to tell at a glance..........

rugerguy is correct. Once you learn about them, they do seem to jump out at you when you start scanning guns. I once spotted an all blue LWT from about 20 ft due to the slight color difference of the frame/barrel. Got it for a "regular" Single-Six.
If you want to add an OM to your bunch, why not get one off the classifieds here?

Yessir, and it all depends as to what YOU are looking for, as to a 'collector",boxed and all or a shooter, user, plinker...I usually have them the whole gammut of shooter for $200, to boxed ones up in the $400 range, ask, they are out there.as noted above, put a "want" in the classifieds and you'll get all kinds of replies...........

Either not there when I have the cash or the show up when my pockets are empty. Which is the more common occurance anymore. And when they do, the prices have gone up considerably in the past two years. If you want an Old Model, try starting out with the .357 Mag. They are more common and therefore more reasonably priced.

They are much easier to spot when you know about them. I have asked gun clerks to see the 3 screw Ruger they have in the case and they don't know what I am talking about.

Just keep searching. They do seem to be few and far between but they are out there. I was patient and finally found a true 'mag' only Single six. I was at my local gun store yesterday and they asked what, if anything, I was looking for. I told them I was always looking for OM Single Sixes and was also looking for a three screw 'flattop' Blackhawk in 357 with a barrel shorter than 6 1/2 in. They commented that they honestly hadn't seen either for a long time.

3 screws are fickle. I can go a year without seeing one then all of a sudden, 3 or 4 will show up at the area LGS's. I definetly agree that once you know what to look for they will stand out more. You may not find that really "rare" model out there, but then again you may!(I happened to and didn't even know it!)

There are lots of 3-screws out there. They're not all in pristine condition, but if you're not looking for a particular caliber/model/length, you can likely find SOMETHING.

If you're picky, it gets a little more difficult.

Remember, They went "away" forty years ago. With some exceptions, seems the Single six plain Jane versions will be more common.......Flattops, Lightweights, Engraved Single Six, 6 1/2" Factory Supers are seldom seen..........Train your eyes to look and ASK for them. 8)

If i were to find one at a local shop, and had the means at the time i would probably buy it, just because i have never seen one, i have never had the opportunity to even fondle one , except for the flat gate and i dont remember if it was a three screw, and it was way out of my price range, and i aint interested in a "safe queen" type, all my guns are shooters and i dont have enough money to spend on pieces just to say i have one or a collection of them although i would like to someday. I appreciate all the replies and I'll run across one someday that I'm sure of. Just gonna be " right place at the right time " kinda moment. If i had my druthers, I'd druther have a 4 5/8" 357, 44mag or 45lc but that is just a side note when i run across a shooter grade three screw. Thanks again Peck

If it was a flatgate it was a three-screw Single-Six unless somebody had messed with it.

I'll guess you can come across a Single-Six of some variation or a "protected rear sight" .357 Blackhawk or a similar Super Blackhawk without too much trouble. The occasional .30 Carbine Blackhawk shows up, too, usually for a price that reflects its lack of appreciation. Same goes for .41 Mags. The .45 Colt items seem to be kinda pricey, as are the ones SPLITZ mentions.

They are all going up in price though, so don't procrastinate too long.

I missed out on an old Bearcat (I posted about it in the collectors section). But I did just score a 1970 3 screw Blackhawk in .357 Mag for $395 (shipped) from another forum I'm on. It came yesterday. Bad part was no box or anything but it's in great condition and I really can't even see a turn line. I'll be posting pics in the next day or two. I'm a DA revolver kinda guy but you can't pass up a 3 screw at a good price.

They have been popping up real often for me lately. I found this one, the Single Six at the bottom of the photo, about seven or eight years ago in a local shop.

Grabbed it.

Then I went some time before I saw any more. I found this 44 Mag Flat Top at an auction a few months ago.

Then about a month later I came across this 357 Mag:

Then two weeks ago I came across this 357 Mag Flat Top as I entered a local gun show. I grabbed it real quick. To make matters worse, the same dealer had a 44 Mag Flat Top too. But I only had enough $$$ for the one, so I took the 357. I have some original grips on the way to replace the ones the original owner 'customized'.

Ran across a nice adjustable sight Single Six not too long ago too, but I don't have a photo of it yet.

I tend to agree, once you start looking for them, they start to show up. The day I came across the adjustable sight Single Six there were two others to choose from.

This one here was bought off the Ruger forum.
There are some awful nice ones out there and the triggers are alot better than the updated ones or the new model ones.
Remember to watch out for the transfer bar updated models.

I just can't seem to come to terms with the action of the New Models...

I've had several over the years starting in the mid 70s til just last year.
Kept selling them off and replacing them with the Three Screw models.

That's just me, I guess.

I felt the same way for many years, but then I picked up a Bisley one day and soon decided that I would find a way to overcome the new model's trigger to get the grip. :?

Then you copy the web address of the picture you want to post, and paste it into your post with IMG tags on both ends. Photobucket gives you the whole thing to copy without having to add the tags. the whole thing looks like this without the spaces:
