Interesting. I too had never heard of this.
But Moon should be grateful. Steve should have whipped his backside HARD for such behavior. And given Moon's history,, Steve would have likely been justified.
Oh,, I've also heard about Moon's abilities as a drummer. I knew a lady who could easily out-drum him. She never became famous because she wouldn't leave her band behind. She'd say; We all make it or we all don't."
She was known up & down the eastern seaboard where her band played as "Theresa, The Queen of Percussion."
She'd play 19 drums & 13 cymbals. And she was only 4'11" tall. A special mirror was built, placed behind her, to allow folks to watch her.

Will Dabbs has quickly become one of my favorite writers in both GUNS and American Handgunner magazines.
Even Pete Townshend wasn't all that enamored with Moons' style. I am a drummer, and it isn't difficult to play loose as Moon did. Keith didn't play in a typical fashion, structured as other musicians prefer, he just winged it. And he was just talented enough to pull it off. Later in their history, Moon played with more discipline and structure, but he was doomed in his addictions.
Pete once said that The Who would have ceased to exist had there not been a change in that particular position.

He being atypical made him special to me. John Bonham also comes to mind.
He was really good. Listen to songs like Bargain, I Can See For Miles, Who Are You, The Real Me, of course Wont Get Fooled Again.
Daltry said his time was perfect, a metronome. AFAIK the only time he played to a track was on the synth songs.
He played endlessly long fills, and yet stayed in the moment.
Bonham was the polar opposite. Very locked in, very structured. His fills graduated from verse to verse, and you could tell what was coming because he always held to that formula. He played HARD, and you could feel the force of his hitting in the music. Some of his fills you just have to fake because you can't figure out how the.....he did it.
I saw Zep at the Frankfurt Festhalle in Germany the summer before JHB died.
I saw The Who in the same building about a year after Keith Moon died.
Both were geniuses in their own way.
