Steve McQueen in Bullitt

Recently re-watched it and was still impressed by the car chase. The car McQueen drove, a green Mustang had license plate JJZ 109 has been switched by the new owner to BULLIT. During the chase, it sounded like the Mustang did not have a muffler. Robert Duvall played a taxi cab driver. Almost did not recognize him. Jacqueline Bisset running walking around in a PJ top or McQueen's shirt. Robert Vaughn as a seemingly bad guy. Norman Fell (Three's Company landlord before Don Knotts). Simon Oakland and Vic Tayback, other notables. Overall the acting was not that great and of course the car chase was the highlight of the movie. For those seeking continuity, there are a lot of errors in the movie. The one I noticed the most was during the chase when a Volkswagen Beetle was passed several times. (Hollywood for ya) Maybe it was faster then the Mustang and the Dodge Charger? Anyways, enjoy the chase, the rest of the movie, eh!

Two things I loved about the Movie. One was the slow build up to the Action chase scene. Both car's going slow, almost like two fighters feeling each other out before the action, similar to the sound tract of Jaws with the suspenseful music becoming more intense as the shark comes closer.
I love the Driver of the Charger. Dressed in a business suite with dark rimmed glass's and racing gloves on. You know this guy is all business, no flunky behind the wheel. He is a Professional.

The things I remember are supposedly the mustang was not stock and the charger was. Either a 440 or hemi in it. And how many hubcaps the charger lost in the chase.

The bad guy with the horn rims was Bill Hickman, stunt driver extraordinaire. He did most of the driving and coordination. He's definitely worth Googling...

The chase scenes in today's movies turn me off. The movie Bullett had real acting, real suspense both with the chase and the entire movie None of this kiddie macho crap we see today. Well written, well scripted. well directed. A Real Movie.

I'm not a mustang fan, but Bullitt was a beautiful car. I'd still prefer the Charger.

Agree great chase scene.

McQueen was awesome. The real deal.

The Great Escape is considered to be one of the best motorcycle movies of all time because of McQueen's motorcycle riding.

The Sand Pebbles was my Dad’s favorite movie. His Dad served and saw action in China before WW2. Before VCR’s he made sure to watch it whenever it was on TV.

The Bullit Stang sold for 5 million a few years ago at the Mecom auction. The seller gave 3500 for it. He lives in Hendersonville, TN. I think.

The same driver of the charger was in seven ups a crime drama he was involved in a chase scene in that movie also not a bad chase scene

First saw the flick back in 68. Think the Mustang had the 390 C.I.D. Saw it sold at Mecum way back. Guy had the letter from Mc Queen offering to buy it back from his dad. Yeah sold for a small fortune. I would say a good purchase!

I have always been a Mustang fan but would prefer having the Charger and yes I do believe it was a 440 6 Pack engine.

Bullitt is one of the three top car chase movies I have seen the other two being The French Connection and To Live And Die in L.A.!

Like to add Vanishing Point from 1971 with Barry Newman. Almost bought a 69 Mustang but the movie changed my mind. Only 2 real good years for that model with big blocks.

One of my favorite things in Vanishing Point was the biker's girlfriend who has the clippings from the driver coming to the aid of the woman from the would be rapist fellow cop.

Yep recall it. Guess they wrecked a few Challengers making that flick. Had the DVD for years myself. Think Cary Loftin did some of the stunt driving. Was a great Drive-In movie in the 70s. Probably saw it 20 times.

Another favorite movie with tons of car chases which we both watch fairly regularly is Moonrunners from 1975, fun one and the precursor to The Dukes of Hazzard!

My all time favorite chase scene was from a Dirty Harry movie. He is being chased by a remote control car full of explosives!




The best part of these old movies for me are the cars and trucks in the background.

Absolutely, James Mitchum was also one of the stars of Moonrunners, another of the movies I mentioned. He was great as Grady Hagg, cousin to Bobby Lee Hagg(Kiel Martin). Add in Arthur Hunnicutt as Uncle Jesse.
