The only positive reviews you'll hear on the stuff will be anecdotal. It's basically PTFE - which is to say Teflon - suspended in light oil. I do believe that the chemical engineers that designed the motor oil in your car knew what they were doing, as did the mechanical engineers that designed the engine.
For myself, I follow my owner's manual and use the finest manufacturer recommended oil I can get.

In the early 90's I added some Slick 50 manual transmission additive to the 5-speed trans in my 1992 truck. The trans became a bit more difficult to shift, especially when cold. I drained it out & replaced with Valvoline gearbox lube. Somehow the Slick 50 affected the synchronizers.

Passenger car oil has been reformulated over the last decade or so. The EPA has required that the zinc additives be removed. Zinc is very important for lubricating high pressure areas like the interface between a flat tappet lifter & a camshaft lobe. Most newer engines have roller lifters these days, but not so for older engines. A ZDDP additive, or a "Racing Oil" with a high zinc content is recommended. I've been using Valvoline VR1 in older engines.

I'm of the opinion a chemical engineer fresh out of college on his first day in the lab of a major oil company knows more about this stuff than the combined wisdom of millions of Interwebs conversations. As such, Jeff's right: let the guys who actually know what they're doing do it, and benefit from their work and knowledge!

Yup, Slick 50 is just Teflon/PTFE, and DuPont, who pioneered that material, used to have what seemed to be about a weekly PSA on Slick 50 to the effect of "It was not designed to be used in lubricating oils, does no good in them, and you're just wasting your money putting it in yours."

So who ya gonna believe? The guys who work for a chemical company at least 200 years old (think they learned anything in that time?) who actually MAKE the stuff, or some guy on that barstool down at the end who loudly proclaims he put the stuff in his car, which immediately gained 150hp, gets 25 more mpg, and now he has to fight off beautiful women every where he goes? We know who the marketing dept is betting on!

On the ZDDP additive issue, I'm not sure how bad the problem really is, but it does seem to be documented reasonably well. On the anecdotal side, there's a fellow some of you have heard of, Irv Gordon, who holds the world's record for mileage in a gasoline engined car. His 1966 Volvo P1800 has over 3 million miles, and he was on his third engine last I knew. I saw a discussion he was in on a car forum about what kind of "special" oil and/or additives he used. Irv wouldn't give the brand, but said he's used 15W-40 diesel oil (which also has an "S" rating for gasoline use) for quite a number of years. It's easy enough to deduce from there he's talking about Chevron's Delo 400, Mobil's Delvac, or Shell's Rotella (all of which pass million mile tests for diesel use.) It's no surprise that with improvements in oil technology, his second engine outlasted the first (if memory serves, it was about 660k for the first, somewhere over a mil on the second, and the third has more than the second did.)

It's rumored both the diesel and the "high mileage" formulations of regular gasoline motor oils either have more ZDDP or something else that doesn't eat catalytic convertors. Who knows, those guys in the white lab coats may just know something!

for the heavy rotating equipment I onced worked, TEFLON near the journals was avoided!

the story is the teflon will fill voids in the journal and create a slick surface that will prevent the oil to build up a film with rotation (the film lifting and keeping the journal from touching the bearing's surface).

teflon in oil additives were also banned
 
Delo-400 & Rotella used to have a much higher zinc content, but even they have been reformulated & the zinc content reduced.

Of course there are many variables such as camshaft lobe profile, valve spring pressure, etc. A gradual ramp, low lift, cam lobe, with very little valve spring pressure, may survive just fine. Who wants a camshaft like that though?
 
I have never used anything but plain old Non-Synthetic oil in my cars.. Anything else is just pure snake oil I was told by a mechanic..
 
Slick 50 and a magnet on your fuel line will make your engine run forever and never need any more gasoline because of the great mileage from being friction free and the gasoline molecules aligned.
 
There was the "make your car an air breather" device from J C Whitney to further improve things.
 
Somebody back in the day calculated that if you installed all of the gimmicks and fluid in your car that claimed to improve your MPG, that you would have to periodically drain gas from the tank to keep it from overflowing. :shock: :lol:

Doesn't teflon burn at around 4 or 500 degrees? with my limited engineering knowledge it just don't seem quite practical to put in an internal combustion engine....

Oh and how can the guy hold the milage record when he's on his third engine... I suppose it depends on how you look at it. I guess that is about a million for each engine...

Hi,

The record is for the car, not just the engine. In other words, simply how many miles are on the clock?

I saw the actual mileage figures on the engines once, and as best as memory serves, the factory engine went about 660k miles. The second engine it seems went about 1.2 mil, and he was still on the third engine at the 3 million mile mark. Also, I seem to recall one of those replacement engines was a rebuild!
