security six rear sight play

the rear sight on my otherwise perfect security six has an excessive amount of up and down play that is not spring loaded.
i took it apart and everything seems to be there.
the play is just in the sight blade base. there is a spring that is horizontal and does not control this motion. this spring seems to function as a tension for the windage adjustment, only.

It`s not a fixed set up like a Bowen ruff country site .

Maybe the springs have weakened over time ??

how do i tell if my sight has the "bump" or not?
even though it looks correct, i think somebody replaced the sight blade as it is more of a clearance issue causing the play, rather than a spring malfunction, i think.

Does the rear sight have two little springs between it and the cylinder frame's top strap?

yessir, should be TWO 'MR-59-F' elevation springs, under the sight body.......
as noted above :wink:
push down on the sight body and see if it "springs" back up???? folks loose them OR if they bottom out the sight, they take them out completely.........

dunno,
i haven't taken the main part of the sight off, because the looseness is confined to the part that holds the sight blade only.
there is an up and down amount of play that is badly excessive.

Sounds as if the springs are missing or have been compressed as rugerguy posted .

The windage spring is a small spring & can hang in the well it sits in , fashion a hook to snag it .

Just make sure the well is clean before inserting the new 1 & I use a spraycan straw to compress it while inserting the blade.


Drift the pin out with a brass punch ,then hold the site body down while removing screw last , lift the body straight up as the springs should be sitting in small indentations .

it isn't the windage spring.
i still think it is a replacement blade that isn't thick enough.

or did someone alter,open the notch?? easy enough to remove and measure BOTH...make sure the windage spring is the right one, and one can always put in a glob of any "gun grease" to keep things a bit more 'snug' if its "close",,,, if too much difference, you gotta "close" the gap (notch,groove), OR put in a thicker sight blade...........it just maY BE THE 'WRONG' blade in the sight body..........get a new one from Ruger, as well as the spring & screw at the same time.............same parts in some of their 'other' sights, across models.......

Ruger's "Six" series of Double Action Revolvers use the exact same rear sight assemblies that similar vintage New Model Single Action Revolvers have.

Parts are plentiful and inexpensive.
