Scope question

My Son-in-law has a decent old Monkey Wards .22 bolt action ( rebranded Mossberg 341) with a broken, dead, extreme low end 3/4" scope on it.

Thought I would get a usable 1" scope for my Grandsons to give him for fathers day. It is a plinker / fun gun and I am thinking a medium grade 4x and can get a Simmons Pro Rimfire (SPR432) 4x complete with rings off Amazon for a little under $50.00.

Anyone have experience with these or have another recommendation?

rather than the 4x Simmons from Amazon I just found an on-line seller, FreedonUSAsales that had the older discontinued Pro Target Rimfire 2-7x version still in stock and it was a little more than $10 cheaper shipped. Never heard of the company but a search on line showed it was supposedly legitimate. No returns But I can live with that and I paid using Paypal so I have some protection.

I have found 2-7X to be a good range for a .22 and the older versions come with trajectory dials for .22 LR and .17.
 
simmons makes a decent scope.. I own three (all on .22's) they are all good performers... It's hard to justify hundreds of dollars on the rifle that will be used at such short distances...

Yes, grooved receiver. I went with the older model Simmons 2-7x variable. It is a good useful power range on a plinking .22 and, in my opinion, the older model is a little better scope than the latest version as they cut some corners, no .22 or .17HMR elevation turrets and seemingly a cheaper ring set on the latest one , to keep the price down. AND, because it is an old stock older version I got a GREAT price in it.
 
The Simmons Pro Rimfire 4x scope is a totally respectable option. 😉
I have a copy on one of my squirrel woods 10/22's...

The Bushnell Trophy on my 10/22 International serves me well enough.

Although I'm a Leupold snob and never put anything else on my rifles, I have seen lots of good used 1" scopes with rimfire rings already on them at gun shows for $20 or less. Used Chinese scopes are hard to sell.
There is always the risk that rings will be too tall or too short.
 
There are some suprisingly good'cheap' scopes on the market today. If you ahop around, $30 will buy you a scope that you can get the full potential out of that rifle
 
I picked up a stainless Marlin 60 off Gunbroker for $93 back in 2010 that came with a POS plastic 4x that wouldn’t hold zero worth a tinkers damn, put a silver 3-12 Simmons on it (under $100 with rings IIRC) and now it’s a tack driver out to 50 yards. I have a couple Simmons and they have clear optics and hold zero fine, I think they are a great option for what you’re looking for.
 
The 2-7X Simmons Pro target Rimfire is on it's way UPS. I did find out that the rings that come with it are Weaver type for a Weaver mount so I needed to pick up a set for the grooved receiver. Was able to score a set cheap off eeeebaaay and still have right at $50.00 in everything.
 
I’ve got a Simmons on my stainless 10/22 for about ten years or more and haven’t had any problems with it. Also have a BARSKA Plinkster on my Target 10/22 which works quite well. I just don’t remember what it cost but I’m pretty sure it was less than $100 shipping & tax included
 
Look for classic 3-9x or 2-7x magnifications to match the timeless feel of the rifle without overpowering it.

i recommend the Vortex diamondback is relatively cheap & has a BDC in the 4-12x40, paired with a Savage MkII SV. Around $400 total.
 
simmons are made for this application. solid quality for rimfires at budget friendly price.

my first 10/22 wore a simmons 4x back in the 80's and it's still kickin. I since have put a couple simmons on other rimfires.

I like a premium scope as much as the next guy, but some applications simply don't warrant the cost. this is one of them.

The 2-7x Simmons arrived today UPS. New, sealed in the box and a price that could not be beat. I took it out to look at it and register it for my SIL. My grandsons will give it to him on Fathers day and I think he'll like it. It may not be the best scope but it is head and shoulders above the junker 3/4" scope on it now. The rings that come with it won't work (grooved receiver) so I'm also giving him a set that'll work.

wow that's a dandy lookin scope with target turrets even! I'm sure he'll be pleased as punch! (y)
