I just purchased a MKii stainless competition target model which was sold to me as a govt competition model, but I can not find any model or model # anywhere on the pistol or the box. It is 6 7/8 slab sided stainless model and sold as model 678gc but would like to be sure what I have, can anybody help with identification?

Welcome to the Forum!
The gun will not have the model info stamped on it. However, it will have something like "Competition Target" on the receiver. There is also a Government Target model,, but it has a bull (round) barrel. The box should have an end label that has; KMK678GC. That stands for; K (stainless) MK (MK series,) 678 (barrel length) GC (Government Competition Target).
I have one of those as well.
The other one,,, Is a MK678G,,, which is a blued round barrel Government Target Model. I have one of those as well.

Nothing on the box at all but it is slab sided, so it is safe to assume it is a non-government competition model? Does the serial # offer any clues?

Model number is 00186. Catalog number is KMK678GC. It should have COMPETITION TARGET MODEL stamped on the right side of the receiver. Call Ruger and give them your serial number. They will normally give you the above information if you ask them nicely. Might even give you a manufactured date.

what 'contender' said, it should be marked on the right side of the receiver, otherwise it is all on the end label and MORE SO, on the cardboard shipper................
yes, a picture and the serial number would help, but without the other info, you need to call the factory, HOPEFULLY, they will tell you,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

1gun,
it looks exactly like yours except mine has a black trigger and the pin above the finger guard is stainless not gold. , also it has target grips.

Here's mine that says Competition Target Model on the right side.

Hittman,
that is exactly what I have, black trigger and all. My trigger pull is 2.5 lbs, is that standard or has the trigger been modified?

My gun is as she came from the factory.

Well, except for the grips.
I'm a lefty so the grips with that "bump" on the wrong side don't work for me.

Oh yeah, and I added the bit of orange model car paint on the front site too.

Hello. Just joined!
I have a model 00186 Ruger competition stainless slabside with Ruger oem walnut grip. Competition midel is stamped as stated in the thread. Bought new early nineties. Looking for any feedback on rarity/value of this model as I really can't find much. Read only about 500 were made. Not looking to sell, just curious. Perfect condition other than a blemish on right site of barrel. Possibly metal transfer from sloppy storage. Maybe a magazine resting against it. Pitted. No idea how it happened. Loaned it out over the years so who knows. Thanks in advance! Ray

As stated by 1gunsnotenough, they're generally pretty common.

There might be an exception for an unusual variation, such as a different drill/tap configuration. The vast majority of them came with three holes drilled/tapped. There were some early examples of the Competition Target that were drilled/tapped with only two holes.

One of them -might- command a premium, to someone specifically looking for that model. (I don't know if they were the same model number, or not.)

I'd guess that there are a few of the two-hole models out there owned by folks who don't even realize that they have something "different…" 💡

There are a few recently completed GunBroker auctions. I didn't study them but it looks like $350-450 (+tax, +shipping, +FFL on your end) is pretty common.

Thanks! Don't have a login for gun broker but will research the 2 hole model you referenced

Welcome to the forum.
Here's a couple of threads I found using the search feature.
Search completed auctions on places like GunBroker for most recent real world values.
Thanks!
Mine is the slab side 6 7/8 barrel with Ruger factory walnut grip and scope mounts. This special setup is what I'm curious about. I don't have a login for gun broker but will look into it.

I suppose I should have uploaded pic. The holes you referenced are for scope mounts?

Yes.

Here is the typical scope mount that came with that model, for many years:

It’s probably the same one that you have pictured.

There are three variations of this mount that I’m aware of:
-two holes (early production, I’ve never seen one)
-three holes (as pictured above, and by far the most common)
-three holes, extended length (not sure whether I’ve ever seen one)
