ruger gp100

i picked up my second ruger revolver on thursday, a gp 100 4" ss. it has the full length barrel lug. are the full length lug's stronger than the 1/2 lug. it seems they would be stronger because they support the barrel for the entire length. or is it just a appeal/style decission ? it dose'nt seem like you see that many 1/2 lug's. i assume the 1/2 lug's would be a little lighter. thanks

Congratulations from a fellow KGP-141-owning Missourian. I think the full lug is more for style and balance. More mass toward the muzzle will translate into less muzzle rise with heavy loads. I think you'll love it.

I had mine out for the first time in too long the day before yesterday. They are a sweet shooting revolver. Completely docile with .38 Special, and just enough thump to let you know about hot .357's. A good friend and his 14 year old son came out, and we did a bit of target practice. The son had never shot a revolver before, and was laying .38 Specials right in there in no time with my GP. 8)

Full underlug barrels came about for a couple reasons. The underlug protects the ejector rod. It makes the whole revolver heavier which is good for .357 especially, and specifically heavier in the front end, helping with muzzle rise. It does make the barrel minimally stronger, although that is not generally a big issue. Some GP's have a partial underlug which is mainly to look cool or lighten the barrel a little. The most important thing on these barrels is to make sure they are screwed on square to the frame, (which many are not.) Otherwise, remove the sharp edges and burrs and have a blast.

Carry-Up: I just recently bought a new 3" GP100 which was unusal in my experience with Ruger revolvers -- it was already deburred and all the places where they usually have sharp edges were nicely smoothed. What a pleasant surprise. I found a set of the short old style grips and wood inserts so the huge Hogue monogrip is in the box.

Nice GPs Gp100man. I think we may have the same panel maker. 4521dln IMHO you can't due better than a GP. Mine are permanent residence in my house hold.

my gp 100 is my second ruger revolver. i have a srh 7.5" in 44mag. i was so impressed with the accuracy and ease of shooting the srh, that i had to have another ruger revolver. the gp will be my range gun, since the gp and srh have the same grip. i have had s&w revolvers in the past, but love the tank/ hd feel of the rugers.

Me as well. I do have Redhawks but most are old style as in my avatar. My Alaskan has the same grip frame as the GPs and all fit my hand very well. My old Redhawks have a little different feel but as you said the tank heft goes a long way with me.

Wow! That's one heck of a collection. About the only thing missing is 6" full lugs?

Thanks, I was focused on the fixed sight models.
The 4" adj. example is engraved and is ser no. 170-0411, a very early gun.

I just happen to like the half lug 6" guns and managed to pick up these at a good price. The blued one is a 'safe queen', the stainless is a great shooter.

I have picked up one of the last blued 4" half lug with the Hogue grips in .38 spl. Has to be a very limited number of these since the blued half lug fixed sight was dropped about the same time as the Hogue grips were introduced.

I'm missing the blued 3" short lug in both 38 spl. and 357 and many of the 38 spl. only editions of the fixed sight guns.
(The Ca. 'safe gun' list law makes it a bit more of a challenge to pick up the odd ones. :shock

TERRY T do you feel there is a noticable differance in felt recoil, between the differant barrel lengths ? i would think the 6" would have the least amount of felt recoil do to the added barrel weight? with the 3" having the most felt recoil. or are they all about the same?

I'd say there is more difference in felt recoil between different bullet weights than between different barrel lengths. Heavy bullets kick more than light bullets.
That said, I shoot only the 6" half lug stainless and the 3" full lug stainless. The others are 'safe queens' (unless the Zombie outbreak happens :shock: ). I have many (32) six series double actions that are my first choice for 'carry'.
