What causes the ejectors to operated when the barrel is opened (cracked) after shooting.. Is it mechanical or is it due to the explosion of the cartridge. How does it know not to eject the shell when cracked if it hasn't been shot. I guess the question is how does it know when to extract or eject. As the old joke goes "how do it know". Thanks.

johnhb2....To answer your question, when you open your shotgun two rods in the lower frame are pushed back by the ejectors. If the gun was fired the rods force the hammers back. The resistance of cocking the hammers preloads the ejector springs and this snaps the shell case from the barrel. If the case was not fired the unloaded ejector only raises the case. Hope this answer your question. R S

C'mon, man......We never even got to the electronic sensors and actuator motors part of the explanation before you went and ruined it with reality......

Thanks Rod for the explanation, I appreciate it. Would it be correct to say that that the quality of the shell used (oz of shot) should have no impact on the ejector performing correctly. I have one ejector that works 90% of the time but sometimes sticks closed when the barrel is opened after use. Thanks

johnhb2...As with any gun repair, clean and lube is always a good first step. I would be very surprised if the shell was the cause of your problem. If after clean and lube you still have problems lets talk more on this. R S

Thanks again Rod for the help and info. I did remove the extractor, spring, and pins and cleaned them all and the channel they go in. I haven't used it since so I will let you know how it goes when I can. Thanks again for your courtesy and help.

I love my Red Label and hope yours is fixed with a good cleaning. I had ejector and timing problems with mine that needed a trip back to Ruger. It has been flawless ever since. I had heard that they aren't servicing the gun anymore which would suck. I wish you luck.
