recalling cartoon strip

I am trying to recall the name of a US newspaper single pane cartoon strip from the early 1980s

the main charector wore a cowboy hat, drove pickup truck and cartoons were normally in some type of construction theme.

I thought the cartoon was "Jake", but that is not getting any google hits.

I recall one cartoon is where he was told by his boss to hide the nail heads by first hollowing out the 2X4 and driving from the inside

the cartoon I really want to find is the guy is working in a powerline bucket during a lighting strom

Unless it was a syndicated toon it is gonna be hard to find using just that description. Do you remember which papers it ran in?

I think it was syndiacted. I thought I saw it while I travel the US during that period, but it was in the South Atlantic region papers.

the weekly panes were just b&w. not sure if there was a colored sunday.

JFB, Sorry that I can't help you with that one. Here is a couple your might remember though.

I think that I remember that J.R. Williams used to have two cartoons in our local paper, years ago. One was called "Bull of the Woods" about men working in an industrial factory of some type, such as a steel mill, auto plant, etc. The "Bull of the Woods was the plant Foreman.

His other cartoon was about cowboys in the Mesquite Country of Texas and the predicaments that they continually got into.

Of course there were others that we always enjoyed, such as "Li'l Abner", "Katz and Jammer Kids", "Popeye", etc.
