What style should a 69 single six cylinder have for a 22lr ? Should it be flat or the other style with cut outs. Thanks for your time.

I meant on the head/loading end. Not the outer end. Thanks so far. The revolver came with the mag cylinder and no lr. So now I am on a quest.

I guess my question is if the cylinder should have the fireing pin cutout or not.

Fluted with firing pin groove.

Old model cylinders look exactly alike except for the breech end. Both LR & WMR cylinders are fluted.

A new model w/o the firing pin groove will also work. But whatever you find, measure the overall length of your cylinder and be sure not to get a LR cylinder that is shorter than that.

So, why does one have the groove and the other doesn't?

I do believe that was how the OM cylinders were identified or differentiated. There is no other way to tell them apart.

You can tell them apart by looking into the chambers.

The .22LR chambers are bored straight thru.

The .22 Magnum chambers have a "shoulder" about two-thirds of the way in.

I am told that initially the Magnum cylinders were going to have the groove as well, but it was decided to eliminate it to better support the case heads on the higher-pressure rounds. I think I got that info from Dougan's book, but I could be wrong.

:)

Edited for spelling.

Thanks for the answers. When I saw the picture of the breech end, I remembered my books weren't all boxed up from the fire and I had the info all along.

I walked in a pawn shop, hopeing to see a blue gp100, only to find a OM Single Six with a 4 5/8 barrel. I asked if they might have the lr cylinder that goes with it, and got reamed a new one from the sales lady. I was told that it was only made as a 22lr, and no mag cylinder could be had.

They were asking $325 and I offered $200. We agreed on $250otd. Now my quest for the lr cylinder.

What was she reaming you for, she needs a reamimg. There were no Mag only or LR only single sixes in 1969, all had both cylinders. What's the serial number? What is stamped on the left side of the frame?

Yeah, you did good. First thing you need to do for your quest is get an over all measurement of your mag cylinder with a caliper in .001 ths of an inch because the cylinders vary in length. Don't buy one shorter than yours. The same or a little longer is OK. If too long just fit it by taking some off the hub on the front end.

A new model LR cylinder w/o the firing pin groove but is also fluted will work just fine as well if you're not set on an OM. Might be easier and cheaper to find too.

I can only figure she was having a bad day and I was the one she let go on. All I asked was "do you happen to have the other cylinder?". Her reply was"it's a 22lr only, otherwise it would say magnum somewhere on the gun and it doesn't. " I just looked at her, didn't say anything, that's when she let the reaming start " I'm tired of all you gun experts coming in here and telling me my business, I called the factory and they said it was LR only." That's when I started to ignore her.

When her gumbs quit flapping I handed back the revolver, thanked her for her time and left. Then it dawned on me that it was a 4 5/8. I waited a few minutes and went back in and put $200 on the counter and asked if that was enough. She looked at their code and said the best was $275 plus tax. I then countered $250 otd , and said that I was doing her a favour by buying the gun because now no more experts could ask her about the other cylinder.

My overall is 1.616
My middle is 1.4075
With ratchet 1.489

Thanks for the tip. Mine camewith the mag cylinder, already have a line on a lr cylinder. Thanks again for thinking about fellow members.
