NRA VISA Card

You might remember a couple years ago (2018, maybe even 2017) that NRA's credit card carrier, FirstBank of Omaha, announced that they were cutting ties with NRA. At that time I applied for and got a credit card from a different place, but the interest rate was a little higher, so I figured I'd just keep using the NRA card as long as it lasted.

The NRA card's expiration date came and FirstBank sent me a new one, still saying NRA on it--nothing had changed, apparently. Last year I had a fraud problem with it and FirstBank cancelled it and sent me a brand new one--still saying NRA. Still nothing had changed.

Last month in the mail I got a new credit card out of the blue. I didn't pay much attention to it. This used to happen all the time back in the old days (but not since about 2008). I just figgered, "Huh, banks are getting competitive again."

Then last week I went to pay my (FirstBank) NRA Visa bill by phone, as I do every month, and told my account was now closed and was being "serviced by Pen Fed. Goodbye!" I dug up the recently-received credit card and sure enough, it was Pen Fen. So I spent about an hour on the phone calling them and setting up my future phone payments and so forth. The Pen Fed girl on the phone hinted that she's heard from other NRA members about this new account, but we got disconnected before I could get any further details.

So far I've been unable to find out what the interest rate on the new card is. The materials that came with it don't say. (Not a huge deal because I carry little if any balance anyway.) Also a big PITA to have to go change my card number for eBay, PayPal, Amazon, and so forth.

Did this happen to anyone else?

No.

For my convenience my credit cards are with local lenders right here in town. So far, I've had no such problems.

I am still waiting for Wayne Lapierre to address what the NRA has done to make it right with the rank and file membership after we lost our perks such as discount rental cars, motels, credit cards, insurance plans, etc.
It was a rotten deal and I personally think the NRA should have done a class action lawsuit against all the companies who crapped on us over Democrat gun control panic.
One of my biggest complaints about the NRA and every person in NRA management I have mentioned it to has shrugged their shoulders and said "Oh well"......and they wonder why we don't respond to their fundraising efforts

I'm interested specifically in members' experience with the NRA/FirstBank credit card, not in credit cards in general. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to clarify that. Should save many people some time.

A little closer to on-topic.

I don't recall any communications from NRA announcing or offering "new" benefits since the severances. :?

BTW, I just checked my new Pen Fed card and although it has a nice patriotic US flag background, it doesn't say NRA anywhere on it. When I was talking to the girl on the phone the other night, I never mentioned NRA to her, she brought it up first.

A couple years ago I worked at Citi (which I never mentioned here, but will now). I didn't work in credit cards but had many friends there who did. Credit card accounts would come and go with some regularity--Sears, Home Depot, Costco, etc. Whenever we'd get a new account, they'd hire dozens of new customer service people JUST to handle those accounts. I had the distinct impression that the same thing was going on with Pen Fed now, i.e., the person I was speaking to was assigned to NRA accounts. Or maybe EX-NRA accounts, I dunno. Very interesting. Which is why I started this thread.

I always thought it was funny when different sports teams, NHRA,Nascar or whatever promote "their CC to you. Yeah, show the world who you're a fan of. Show your CC to everyone and let them know you're a fan. Hey buddy, look a MY card.

There is probably a star by your account to "identify" you as an NRA member.
(For future reference of course).
Maybe they will track your purchases to see if/when you buy guns or ammo.
If it were me, I'd ditch the card and find another bank, as what you buy is really none of their business.
(Just my opinion).

I received some sort of notice about Pen Fed taking over my account. There was a way to opt out, somewhat convoluted. I did a quick web search, and didn't like what I found about Pen Fed. I still have my NRA Visa card.

I always think it's funny when people have absolutely nothing to say about a given topic (or perhaps don't even understand the topic), but feel compelled for some reason to spend some of their precious time on Earth posting some irrelevant comment. Hey buddy, look at ME ME ME!

Interesting. I still have my NRA Visa card too, it's just no good as of April 26. I wonder if yours is still good. Try it next time you buy something.

Thanks for the on-topic comment, by the way. I really, really do appreciate it.

Interesting. I don't think I've ever used a credit card to buy guns or ammo, but I certainly have used it to buy gun accessories of various sorts.

I have just one CC. But Miss Penny has a few. She decided to get a NRA card several years ago,, and enjoyed using it.
But,, she too got the new card from Pen-Fed. And she got the info that they weren't "the NRA." It was my understanding that the NRA had worked out a deal with the CC company to get a SMALL percentage of every purchase from the fees that were charged. Just another way for them to make money to fight for us. Apparently,, there was a reason they dropped the NRA,, or the NRA severed ties with the CC company. Pen-Fed must have bought out the accounts in deal of some sorts.
I'd have to ask Miss Penny if she found out the interest rate or not.

I do know she had to call Pen-Fed about something to do with the card,, just don't remember what it was.

Thanks, Contender. Very much appreciated!

If Pen Fed is Pentagon Federal Credit Union, I've had one of their other CC for about 8 years and have always been happy with the service I've received.
I believe that it is. Thanks for your input--much appreciated.

I cancelled my NRA credit card as soon as I heard that they severed ties with the NRA. I don't regret it.
