Need A Couple 8-36 Nuts

Looking for some help. I have a action screw I need to shorten. Done this many times. I always use two nuts tightened against each other as a cut off and filing guide. Well I cannot find any 8-36 nuts. Wondering if anyone might have a couple laying around. I can order them online but I don't need a hundred of them. The other option is drill and tap a couple squares of steel and tighten them against each other. But I don't have that size tap or drill. Again I cannot find that size locally so with shipping I am looking at 20 bucks to go that route. All I need is two damn nuts that should cost about 15 cents :x :x

mike, While the nuts are easy enough for me to make, I have a better idea for you. When I want to do a quick cut-off of a screw, I simply put the screw end first in a small vice and tighten down the jaws on the part to be discarded right up to the thread that needs to be cut and use the "vice jaws" as a stop for the hacksaw or cut-off wheel/Dremel and zip the end off. Works like a champ!................Dick :wink:

Thought of that. But my vice jaws don't meet up too square. The other issue is this screw comes up through the tang and is visible. So I want to be able to have a nice clean end which will take some filing before I blue the end of the screw. The vise would work ok if I was not worried about getting a nice smooth flush finished surface. I know it is a minor detail but I am kind of picky. :roll:

Have you tried looking in a hobby shop for such small nuts??? A lot of tiny nuts, bolts, washers etc are used in RC cars & planes,,,!

The common thread size you will find in a hobby store is 8-32.
2-56, 4-40, 6-32 and 8-32. :shock: :shock:

I have had luck finding filler screws and nuts in the jobber boxes at Ace Hardware. They have 4-40, 6-40, but not any x-48 in my local shop. Most often they are already blued. They may very well be worth stopping by if there is one in your area.

I have hit every ACE in the area. They either have real small micro type nuts or bolts or everything else starts at 8-32. Have another Hobby shop to try. If not I guess I will have to order way more than I need.
