I would like to try thinning the front sight of my mini ,how do go about it the proper way?

I haven't fooled with my Mini-14 in a long while. But,,, if it's a removable post front sight,,, you can remove it & mill a little off BOTH sides. Equal amounts. If it's not removable,,, then just mount the gun in a good vise, and mill equal amounts off both sides with a skinny mill cutter.

Before trying to remove the front sight from a Mini-14, know going in that they are a press fit....meaning that simply removing the cross pin is not going to allow it to just "slip off". In other words, you're either going to need some heat, or a dedicated puller/pusher, kinda like this one:

Personally, I'd just mask-off everything that I didn't want scratched up and use a small, safe-edged file. I don't know if that's what you'd call "the proper way"....but hey, folks has been thinning front sights that way for about a hunert years.

That's probably the route i am going, i will count the strokes of the file so that i will take off the same amount of metal from each side.
