As far as to why Ruger went with the rotary mag on this one, could be a marketing thing. Some people want a detachable mag (not me) and like the quick load/unload capability. Rugers other "centefire rifle caliber" rifles do not offer this.

Its too bad I already bought a savage edge (axis) in .308, because I like this new gun from ruger, and would have gotten it over the edge had it been available last year... My edge shoots sub MOA from a shooting bag, so I'm perfectly happy with it, and have no need of another .308 rifle... The trigger isnt as bad as people make it out to be, especialy with a lighter spring.

When they offer this in 300WSM or 300 Win mag, I'll be very interested, as one or the other of those calibers is on my "list", or even a youth stocked .243 for my daughter, as I have been eying the youth axis in 243....

A+ ruger... IMO all their recent releases have been spot on, its like they listen to customers or something....

Another feature the Hawkeye has going for it - steel bottom metal. I've hunted in 0 deg. temps., and I would be worried about the durability of a plastic trigger guard under such extremes.

Jeff

Your worries are unfounded. The LAST thing I'd be worried about would be ANY polymer Ruger component.

You should be just fine at 0 degrees, as a matter of fact even at -30 you should be okay...at least your polymer parts anyway.

I have the Marlin XL7 in 30.06. That is also polymer but it has been a fantastic shooting rifle. The triggers look very similar. The safety is different. I do like the detachable mag. The Marlin is a top loader.

I would like a 300 and would also like a .243 or 7mm-08. This will definately be something for me to consider. I love Ruger quality and made in the USA.

To be real picky and address the temp question, that test should've been done where both pieces are reduced to 0 degrees. Wonder if the polymer would've "bounced" then?

Hi All,

New to the forums here.

Anyway, There is a video overview of the RAR on gallery of guns. They talk about the magazine and mention you can top load the rifle if you wish.

Check it out...

While I would prefer a stainless barrel and action in left-hand, I would be happy to pick up a blued version in left hand if it comes out. And just to be obstinate, I want it in 6.5x55! I have enough left hand rifles in 30-06/270/308/708. The Ruger in left hand 6.5x55 will complement my Savage left hand in 257 Roberts.
