I know that lead in is a real joke... but here is the deal... my wife is and I was for 7 years but that was 40 years ago. I like my meat, especially cow. As most of you know I'm laid up with a broken ankle. I've been getting cards from the folks at our church/fellowship and got one yesterday from my wife's women's group... I thought it was quite funny and true. (Even though I do like grains and greens)

One of my favorites. Goes best with Abita Amber Lager.

ETA:
There's thousands of recipes for Gumbo, but the roux is the important part Unless you know how to make a decent roux, I'd recommend starting with Zatarains gumbo base available at many grocery stores. Just follow the directions on the box (I suggest olive oil instead of other oils). It's basically a mix of powdered spices. After that you add in pretty much whatever you want; hot sauce, shrimp, smoked sausage, pulled pork or chicken, various veggies, or combinations thereof, etc. Cook on simmer and stirring/tasting until you're happy with it. Sometimes served over cooked rice.

I just had a 1000+ lb steer we raised slaughtered. It’s in the freezer. Nearly 700 lbs of fantastic beef.
Poor old cow. I eat beef but I couldn’t eat my one of my pets.

Did he have a name? You know like “Bob tastes really good with these potatoes.”

Like that joke about the three legged pig. The farmer said the pig woke up his family and saved them from a house fire.” Bartender says that’s great by why only three legs? Farmer says, “A pig like that, you don’t expect me to eat him all at once do ya?”

In college I had a roommate who was a vegetarian. I tried it for a while. I think I lasted 3 or 4 months.

But in culinary school, a student from Texas raised her hand and had to ask the definition of a vegan.

And then my friend Bert. But that’s a whole other post.

I was a veggie for 7 years, this was back in the very late 70's and early 80's... hated going to a restaurant.. back then they had no idea how to cook a good vegetarian meal. Only reason I lasted that long was my wife could make some good meals... still does. I've been tempted to back slide and go back in the last year or so... but man I love a good roast beef sandwich.... and let's not forget a real cheese burger with a thick slice of onion... jimmy dreamed of them when he was not eating meat.

Livestock aren't 'pets' although some folks can't keep that straight. When my health forced me out of the beef cow business, we had 150 head of cows that had been raised here on this operation and possibly their mothers too. It was difficult to see them go through the sale barn auction ring. It was also difficult to see the 'culls' go to auction knowing they were headed directly to the bologna factory but it's a fact of life when you're close to Mother Earth.

You make some good points about farming. I was sort of kidding.

But yeah, I bet it was hard to watch an animal you’ve raised and fed and looked after walk up the plank to their end.

and I do think there are people that keep cows as pets. I’ve always thought cows were cute. Not like a fluffy dog, but still sort of cute in their own way.

I doubt I could do it.. or even farm... too much hard work .... heck, in my business if the weather was bad or even if I didn't just feel like it all I had to do was make a phone call and say I could not make it, did not even actually have to come up with an excuse...
But I did grow up on a farm and when I was pretty young... elementary school, I often got to stay home in the Fall on the first cold day and 'help' butcher a hog... up until a few years ago I would go down home and stay with a friend who lived in the slave cabin behind the big house and helped out the lady who lived there and ran the plantation. She raised cattle, not a lot, usually about 25 but it seems that was work especially when one was giving birth... I'd take my dawg Beauregard the Catahula with me and he loved to keep those cows all bunched up.

I named our steers, there was T Bone, Porter House, ol Del Monico, Sir Loins and others.

When I was growing up on my grand parents farm/ranch. We named the cows and steers. One year we named the new calves after the Happy Days characters. I remember when we ate Fonzi.

That kind of life is one where you never get a day off. If the weather is bad, or you are sick, the animals don’t get fed. Gotta clean those steals everyday.

Then in the spring/summer, there is hauling irrigation pipes all over the back forty, and then later having to buck your hay bails after. It’s never ending.

You gotta maintain the fences, and kill off predators that show up. Coyotes and cougars.

That's the attitude most city people have today. They ain't pets. They are food. Get hungry enough and fluffy and scruffy will smell pretty good on a spit. For that matter, so will your neighbor "Bob".

Try growing up on a dairy. Rain, shine regardless, they have to be milked. Same times every day. Yep, that's right "times".

I was raised on a dairy, Jeepnik is right, milk them cows twice a day, every day ! Grassburrs in their chitty tails, slapping you upside your head, chitty feet in the bucket when you’re stripping them, running you over when you turn them in for their turn to get milked…Fun times !

We had a registered Jersey bull that was absolutely the meanest bastage I ever saw. I was deathly afraid of him! My daddy wasn’t, and it almost got him killed. They ain’t pets !

Had a Holstein bull like that. I don't know if today's factory dairies even keep bulls. I'd bet it's mostly the vets that take care of the bulls duties.

Like I said. I was for 7 Years... what actually happened to cause me to back slick was my mother in law had to come and live wit us and my wife had to cook her meals and even though my wife is a vegetarian she cooked meat for my MIL and so I started 'trying' some. Just to say again, I posted this more than once, I like beef, will also eat pork but I refuse to eat fowl... chicken or turkey .. at least the stuff they sell in most stores and in restaurants.... So, by y'all's standards I'm probably just as weird as a veggie ....
Oh, I will eat fish but it is not my favorite.. but oysters or shrimp... I can eat all day long... in fact I did with oysters (raw) one time.

I have a simple philosophy: I have preferences, but I'll eat anything that doesn't eat me first.

My grandfather had a Holstein bull. That bull would follow my grandfather around like a puppy while he did his chores. He’d stick his head in a chicken feed bucket and pin the bucket to the ground just to aggravate my grandfather and did all kinds of other mischievous things on purpose. I saw him pin my grandfather’s boot to the ground with one front hoof then he’d turn his head and ignore my grandfather while he was struggling to get him off his boot. (he never stood on my grandfather’s foot, just his boot) I learned lots of swear words while helping my grandfather on the farm.

When I was a kid we butchered all of our own cattle and hogs , raised most of the vegetables and also had a fruit orchard.
We weren't rich , but there was always food on the table.
We also had 100's of bee hives.

Picky eaters are a PIA. I know they can’t help it. Some have allergies. I know.

When I was a kid nobody was picky and no one had allergies. Somehow we are weakening our gene pool. But that’s a different subject.

I will try anything, and I’ve mostly liked everything I’ve tried. I actually feel sorry for those who can’t enjoy everything.

I prefer meat cooked on it’s bone, it has always tasted better to me. Same with soup, it’s better if a bone was involved in the process.

I love chicken, but prefer not to eat breast meat. No flavor, bad texture, usually dry.

I can’t think of anything I hate, but I avoid raw meat, and I’ve never tried durian fruit. Durian fruit sounds gross.

I knew a guy, who said water gave him heart burn, he only drank Pepsi until noon, after noon he switched to Budweiser. He only ate red meat, potatoes and pasta, never any other vegetables, never any dairy, only thing he snacked on was roasted peanuts. I used to wonder how he was alive.
