Hi folks,

Appalachia Annie and I will be going to SASS CAS Winter Range this year (2019) at Ben Avery in north Phoenix again. It will be our 15th year (and probably our last year) of attending this National Championship shoot. Annie and I have loved coming out here since 1999 to compete. Flying with 8 firearms and 25# of ammo is NOT FUN, so we drive.

Over the last several years I have personally had severe bad reactions driving to AZ and back to Pittsburgh, PA from a stress standpoint. Annie has told me this year she will administer essential oil treatments to minimize my stress reactions. Our normal journey is two and a half days to Ben Avery, shoot for three days, and mousy back to Pittsburgh in four days or so.

I do not know if I believe this will work, but I would like to share my experience with my pards on the RF. Annie has my best interest in her heart, and she loves this journey as much as I do.

More to follow.

All my best.

Yes, properly used, essential oils work! I have eucalyptus sheaves in a closet in my bathroom to repel spiders. My dog who has asthma likes to go and roll in them. No wheezing for hours. Lavender is good for sinus and calming. Good luck! Sounds like Ms Annie is a good one!

Good luck on the trip AND the shoot.

I don't know about the oils,, but I recall a trip from Las Vegas, on a plane,, where my buddy got stuck in a seat across the aisle from me. And in the seat next to him, (past me) was a woman who used an oil on her feet, "to relieve the stresses of flying." He almost got sick from smelling it. We still talk about that one.

But,, I have heard that the oils have helped some folks,, so I wish you luck!

I may have to look into this. The last two years, after returning from the East Coast Gathering at Contender's I am totally messed up for two - three days. Can't explain it, just not myself. My old body just doesn't spring back like it once did.

I used to drive from Tucson to Spring Texas in a one day go. Now we hit a motel somewhere half way there. Until my wife had a stroke we did a yearly trip to Raton New Mexico for an elk hunt but now we stay at my daughter's place in Albuquerque. She stays there and I go on to Raton the next day. Do my elk in, turn it over to the meat processor, go back to ABQ for a few days, then go pick up the meat, one more night in ABQ and hit the road for home. Even now I still work out quite well if I have to take a long road trip but prefer to break it down into more than one day. Besides, driving across Texas from Houston to the NM border is boring as hell.

Stress and essential oils? Y'all are kidding, right?

Bob, I am not kidding. Annie and I have gone WR for many, many years, since 1999, and we love participating in This National Championship SASS match. AND, I have TWO Top Ten SASS belt buckles from 2005 and 2007 in my shooters category, the closest to a 3rd place plaque was 4th in 2007.

Have you ever been there?

We visit my Mom who lives in Prescott, AZ every year we go there to just touch base with her. She is 90 years old and a very loving woman. So this is a very beautiful journey for me and Annie over the last 20 years or so. I have had heart health issues since 2005, but we still keep on going back to WR and Prescott, AZ. This will most likely be our last year to WR and to visit my Mom.

Annie has made it her personal goal to minimize all the stress I have driving out to AZ and back (5000 miles RT) by looking into alternate health choices. I will have no qualms sharing her success with all my pards on the RF, if any of you are interested.

My best wishes to you Bob - you are one of my idols.

The Olfactory sense is as powerful as any of the others Bob. Think of how smells can invoke memories, feelings, etc. Essential oils can be a good way to help relax and manage stress. I have a diffuser for my wife in her office that she uses mostly lemon essential oil with. Now I'm not sure about treatments and many of the other pseudo-science claims that people have regarding essential oils, but the link between the olfactory sense and calming is well researched.

Ever use Vicks Vapor rub? :D.

My mother did! And Raleigh's Camphor Balm! Her theory was that if it didn't smell strong or taste bad, it was useless.

And I guess I just don't understand stress and calming, never having experienced it.

Wow Bob! No one has ever swerved into your lane, and you narrowly missed them? That my friend is stress! Then you take a few deep breaths, and sometimes pat your chest( the thymus gland resides there), that is calming. If you haven’t experienced that, you aren’t human.

I hadn't heard of this either. I've driven some long trips recently but stress is not usually a factor unless I'm in heavy traffic. In 2017 on the DC beltway on a Friday afternoon/evening,I was not having fun.

Coop,
I'm really happy that you and Appalachia Annie will be able to make it to WR. I have never been there or End Of Trail, maybe one of these days. I don't remember what category y'all shoot in. Which does't matter as long as you have a great time. I'm sure you will or you wouldn't keep going back. GOOD FOR YOU two.
As far as the essential oils. My wife and daughter are firm believers in it. Yes it does work for all sorts of pains along with preventing becoming sick.
Wife and Daughter have been going to Salt Lake City for the annual convention of doTERRA Oils, along with 35,000 other believers in essential oils, for several years.
I just asked Wife and Daughter the recommended oil for your trip situation and "Lavender" is the one they suggested to use.
Anyway I hope it helps and have a GREAT time at WR.

OH WJ, you are one of my "finest kind" friends on RF. Indeed, Lavender is Annie's primo stress reliever for our journey to WR this year.

I never heard of a doTerra Oils convention, but I have been to Salt Lake City many times when dad lived there, beaucoup years ago in the 60's & 1970. I am sure many of his Polaris, Poseidon, and Minuteman Missiles solid fueled rockets are still deployed.

I am looking forward to a great journey to Winter Range. Annie's Christmas present (a new holster rig) is currently being crafted by Mernickle as a I type for her use. Thank you for your support and good wishes.

I will enjoy sharing our experiences with all my pards on the RF' and I might even show a "selfie" of our mutual jacuzzi in Anthem, AZ after a day of shooting. Dream on.
