The Winter Ice storm We got in SW Ark dumped 5 1/2" Sleet over an initial 1/4" ice. Over 100 Poultry houses collapsed. On My SIL's house's (My old house's). They are old style 40x400 w 3/12 pitch roof. Thay had accumulated 4"plus sleet. I dropped that back to 3" equivelent solid ice so weighs 14.3 lbs sq ft. His house's had approx 286,000lbs ice on ea house. No wonder so many house's collapsed!!!

I'm starting to think heated metal roofs might become more of a thing.....? I have a 12x12 uninsulated equipment shed. I keep a heater on in there during cold months. Just enough to keep it above freezing. The heat coming through the roof does a decent job of getting rid of build up. What doesn't disappear doesn't stick to the surface, and a good knock with a shovel will start it sliding off.
