Cool old photo

I was aboard the old Kitty Hawk doing the 87 world cruise. While we lingered around the IO, we anchored off Diego Garcia for a couple of days. It was there that the 45 days caught up with us and steel beach were declared. I was a Chief back then and while everybody else got their beer ration card punched (twice at the same time both opened), the Chiefs got to enjoy our Schlitz beer in the mess. I gave the guy my card, he gave it back and handed me a beer from the yugo can full of ice. Basically we could drink all we wanted. I drank my fill and pirated some of it to take to the guys in the power plant shop. I was popular with them for about two whole days. The next day we checked out some deep sea fishing rigs and caught a few White Sea bass. Good eats. Then departed to sit off the coast of Somalia for a time. I bet old Ordyman replaced us or we him.
Ahhhhh......Diego G.....the "Footprint of Freedom".....don't mess with crabs, chickens or donkeys or the guys with the funny hats, accents and bad teeth will come after you with their little not pads. Had to spend several days on that rock once. The beer smelled and tasted like formaldehyde and it was warm. As for fishing the only thing we saw in the water was barracuda chasing little fish.

I don't recall who relieved us (Constellation) in 87. That was Operation Ernest Will time, we were on station when it started.....we talked about Sid Dwyer awhile back, being in your Sister Squadron. Whatever he was on relieved us. That's how I learned I made E4....Sid wrote it on a sparrow missile that was loaded on one of his Squadron's birds that we recovered. I was on CAG ARM/DEARM that day and when the bird turned/stopped for me to start dearming it I saw writing on a sparrow as I was turning the arming handle and my name was there "CONGRATS AO3 MCVEY VF21 SEE YA BACK IN SAN DOG". We didn't have the results yet. I wasn't onboard when the Connie relieved I think the Ranger? I was flown into the mess just after the Stark got hit. Pulled me out of FRAMP early for that entertaining leap frog across the world...Navy version of Plane Trains and Automobiles but with Helos instead of trains.

Kitty Hawk got on Gonzo Station in mid to late Jan. By the time Ernest Will began we had done the ditch, sailed the Med and off loaded at Norfolk. My youngest was born while on Gonzo.

Or the little guy who, when asked his favorite church hymn, proudly said, "Gladly, the Cross-eyed Bear."

In the late 1940s my uncle, while in grade school, was called upon to answer the teacher's question, "Can you make a sentence using the word fascinate?" Sure, he said, "She had 9 buttons on her nightgown, but she could only fasten eight." True story.

We were relieved in late SEP '87......back in San Diego late OCT.....did a pit stop in Perth as a reward for breaking the SORTIE record set back in Nam days. Of course once Desert Storm was in full swing a few years after, that record was crushed.

I failed to address the ship vs boat issue. It's very simple, only submarines are boats and sailors reserve the right to refer to their ships as boats
I was not in the Navy, but my Dad was. He served on a Destroyer in WWII. He often said that in basic training they were taught the difference between a boat and a ship, and they were chastised to never call their ship a boat.

People in Michigan call the thing between the front seats a council. They say it so wrong they sometimes spell it like I did. Explain that.
I've lived in Michigan for 60 years (documented immigrant from Maine) and have never heard anyone call it that.

I was born and raised 26 mile's from the Michigan line in NW Ohio I know that in 1965 the Chevelle SS my brother bought, it was called a "console". It went with the 4 speed option.
Heck I was in the Dollar General store and asked where the scouring powder was. Got a funny look, didn't know what it was. I said like Comet. OH you mean Ajax !.. Kinda like soda and pop. It don't matter if it is a Pepsi or Vernon's, or RC it is still a Coke of various flavors.
Acronyms, I hate it when someone wants you to decode what they mean and never define what it is. Dang systems I worked in at IBM I'd learn a set on a specific system and some developer on a different product would use the same Acronym but meant something totally different. I figured out the philosophy of one that was thinking about something else when he named the control block IOSUCB was taking data from a HDB, Hard Drive Bee. Lol
Tranny has a whole different meaning than it did 40 or 50 years ago. Is there 3 on the tree. 4 on the floor, six on the stick or just an automatic.
I think I'll have a PBR this evening. Pabst Blue Ribbon. Such is life these days. Sorry guys I am recouping from surgery, must be the meds, .

Speaking of 1960s Chevy Chevelles, here is the 1967 Malibu coupe I bought new for $2,685. It had a 283 with 3 on the tree.
Sold it in 1973 for $1,000 with 70,000 miles on the clock.

I had a 64 with a 283 automatic, my brother's was a 65 Malibu SS 283 4 speed. Black with red interior. My brother-in-law had a 66 4 speed with a 327. It was quick after he modified it. I had a 70 Chevelle when I went in the Army the got me Monte Carlo. I had a sleeper when I was done with the 350 putting out 425 hp and a rebuilt 350 transmission with a good shift kit.

Did the IO in the worst of the summer doing intel work on a Soviet island there. We ran into a square miles of large jelly fish bring then basketballs that clogged our water intakes. We couldn't make enough potable water so showers were few and far, very limited AC, thankfully I was in CIC and equipment took priority to crew so stayed cool while on duty, and potable water was also limited some. Had two deck bashes during that time and a few extra brews were given to all as consolation for the 100*+ temps we were subjected to. Those were the days.
My pics are boxed up and at another location.

I have been a GM tech for 25 years and have taken over 1100 classes with instructors from there and they all say it that way.
Off topic but maybe you can help me. My neighbor is selling his 2022 1/2 refreshed ZR2 Silverado with only 38k miles garaged kept, one owner here in Florida. The motor is a 6.2L gasser. I've been doing some due diligence and heard guys talking about their engines blowing up due to bad lifters and the DFM causing that and then I hear of guys saying they've never had a problem. You thoughts as a GM guy please. Thank you ! BTW, he will let me have it for 48K

My wife, born and raised in Dearborn MI, says it like “ council “. We were laughing about this whole thing and she can’t even pronounce “console”!

Damn fools in OP picture were lucky there was not a rock just under the surface of the ground that a riccochet didn't bounce back and injure someone.
No eye or ear protection... just sayin'...

Must have been different then. "Wait until you get in the fleet" or "When you get to your boat" was common talk by the CC's and instructors.

However, they now refer to the barracks at NTC Great Lakes as ships..... ;)
I think you were the only one.....
