5.0 gr RedDot under a 230 gr. cast bullet is my standard .45 Colt cowboy Action load. I have shot hundreds of them since my Trail Boss supply has ran low.
6.0 gr. Green Dot is also good with the same bullet.
I use Red Dot in all my Pistol cartridges as well as my 45-70 with fun results. It is one of my favorites for target loads which is 99% of my shooting. It can be finicky through some powder measures is the negative, but if I had to pick the one powder for all of my reloading, Red Dot would be it!
I've used 6 point one or two grains with an RCBS 250 for over ten years; I took my cue from an article by Brian Pearce in Handloader Magazine. It's a nice mild shooting, accurate load.
I personally use Green dot 7.0g under 250g bullet as my goto load with with .45 Colt, but Red Dot also works fine. I found 6.5g of Red Dot under 250g bullet to be an accurate load. Runs it out at 881fps in my 5 1/2" revolver.
I too have used Red Dot powder when Unique powder was unavailable since I have an 8 lb jug of it (I also load shot shells) and it works just fine except it I found it rather dirty compared to Unique and 231.
RED DOT has a clone...weight for weight, not bulk...called PROMO. $120 for an 8 pound keg. $15 a pound and 1000 loads per pound...what's not to love. I've used it in the past and will crack it open in the near future.
Got To Love The Red Dot !!!! That and Unique !!! Going to Try Some Exp. Loads, Have a Pound of Clay Dot To Play With !!! We Shall See If It is Really Like Clays ???
