So, the clown gets mad and starts tailgating the vehicle. He pulls alongside it and cusses the driver of the truck while pointing a gun at him. But wait, there's more! The only problem is, this truck was equipped with those shiny red and blue lights that blink on and off. Yup, it was an on duty sergeant with the Granite School District in Salt Lake County 🤣

One quick question - what on Earth does a school district police department need with an unmarked vehicle of any kind? Aren't there kids to protect? isn't THAT their job?

This is a BIG school district. Not with your typical 60-something retired cop walking around with a walkie talkie and a ring of keys to lock doors. In the early 70’s this district had almost 100 facilities in the district. No idea how expansive The districts area is now.

The Department now has 16 full-time, sworn officers, 22 part-time sworn officers and nine civilian employees.

In 1985, state legislation was passed, which made it possible to change the status of the security department to that of a school district police department. This legislative action also granted school district police officers the same police authority as any other police officer in the state.

The main focus of the original department was the nighttime protection of nearly 100 district facilities, from acts of vandalism, burglary and arson etc

Said he was off duty. What difference does the markings or lack of on his vehicle have to do with anything?
AM I gald that the idiot in the story was caught - yes. However, school police using unmarked cars is another creep in their duties. In our state we have two ways that sworn officers serve on public school grounds - a dedicated school police department or the county sheriff provides deputies. As someone that has provided training for 10+ years to Peace Officers in GA, often through the Forsyth training center, I can say that I have seen a huge number of issues with school PDs and their behavior and VERY few with sheriff's offices over that time. One big difference is School PD officers ignroing their actual job (protecting our kids) and trying to insinuate themselves into high-profile or "sexier" work. No, local school PDs do not need unmarked cars.

First, some small departments allow their employees to have lights and sirens on their personal vehicles. Heck in some that’s what other than patrol officers drive.

Second, and I hope it’s just me, but many of the newer, perhaps younger, posters seem to have a less supportive attitude toward law enforcement.

Many reasons for that, do you remember "to protect and serve" it got removed off the squad cars many years ago. And they became revenue generators for the cities writing tickets. I once lived in a town that anything above shoplifting they had to call in the State police, that's how long they had not solved any crimes because they forgot how to. And we won't even mention the school shootings in Florida or Texas.

Are they any worst today ?
Who knows but I haven't met many in over 20 years that were worth a shout-out and to be fair I can remember some parked in an alley at night sleeping back in the day. And nowadays you only need 12-15 years to get a pension. Dangerous for sure but on average no more so than working in a factory. A lifetime of being taken care of by the government, from the military into law enforcement while voting for the Mitt Romney types.

When I originally took my conceal carry permit class that was sponsored by the NRA it was taught in partership with off-duty police, a Sgt. and he spelled it out very clearly by saying he was only a handful in his dept. who supported us carrying guns. What the powers behind the scene's did in the 1970's was to effectively remove the police from the public, we use to know their first names, they don't want the police protecting the public, they want them protecting their wealth.

Idiot driver needs to be spanked bad and I vote he looses his right to own a gun too... but I also wonder what the off duty cop did to cause the idiot to go almost postal? I was stopping at a red light just this past week when a police car went by me and ran the light.... no blue lights or siren at all. And I sometime see one that is low on turn signal fluid, in fact I followed one a while back that was low through 3 turns.....

If you're in any way including me in the second point be aware that I have seen 6 decades, provide pro bono training to Peace Officers in my state through the state Police Academy, and have done so for more than a decade. After all this time I know that there are good and bad in every profession, including law enforcement and that even extends to entire departments IMHO. Have a great day.

Unmarked units catch more speeders going through school zones. They are a great idea !!!! Our policy in our old agency we could not issue a warning in the school zone, especially for speeding.; we issued citations every time.
That included the city councilmembers.
We were known as a place to slow wayyyyy down.
In the 25 years there not one kid was ever hit or run over in that district.......

Many of the school zones around here have cameras posted. They even leave them on when school is not in. Revenue generator.

I was by no means trying to defend the idiot, I was just curious what caused it. And also I have a tremendous respect for our law enforcement people, they are doing a job I would not even consider doing, and could never be qualified to do, but is vitally needed.
