"The southern Baptist Church is the only place I ever visited where I felt worse leaving than when I arrived.
Fire and brimstone, buring in hell for ever and ever. Banging the Bible on the podium over and over, screaming at the top of his lungs, saliva dripping as he condems you to everlasting hellfire."
Sadly,, that is the case in many of them. Yet,, in SOME of the Southern Baptist churches,, they are not like that.
I once asked a Baptist preacher about his funeral service. The guy who had passed was a quiet & devoted Christian. And was well known to be soft spoken & well liked. Yet,, the preacher took his funeral and preached a loud & abrasive hellfire & brimstone sermon. And he wasn't even the deceased guy's preacher. He was an "additional" preacher.
I told him I found it offensive to me AND to the deceased. That it was obvious he failed the deceased & his memory. I told him he obviously didn't know the deceased by his sermon, AND his comments.
I told him that as far as I knew,, God was a loving & forgiving soul. And that was a good thing,, because HE was gonna need it when he stood at the Pearly Gates. I added that his type of preaching was WHY I was not a Baptist.
He tried to rebuke me,, and got defensive. Almost forceful in his "explanation" of why the preaching of what would happen if sinners didn't repent.
I said to him; "Gee,, you sound like a bully threatening school kids,, not adults who come to listen to the Words of God!" Then I HAD to walk away.
