An interest new church,, sorta,,,

Well it is the mountains of North Carolina and they did and I think still do a lot of fermenting there. Just down a way are the foot hills between N.C. and S.C. and the western part of that was known as dark corners and back after the war of Northern Aggression it had the most famous outlaw of the times moving shine ... Lewis Redmond.

I wonder if it is going to be a government approved distillery? There are more and more of those showing up claiming to make 'shine' but in my opinion if there is a tax paid on it, it ain't moonshine.

I'm not sure of the back story on this church. It's always been a small congregation church as far back as I can remember. To see this sign pop up recently,, I have to wonder.

And we have had a huge explosion of distilleries all over this area. Mostly "craft" beer types. But we do have a fair number of legal "moonshine" distilleries too.

I will say that many of the craft beer types,, produce some weird & not so pleasant tasting beers. But around Trasheville,, eerrr,, Asheville,, which is billed as "The Beer Capital of the South" breweries are all over the place. Only a few actually have managed to truly survive as a long term business. Many have come & gone.

And blume is right. We have a deep & rich heritage of serious moonshiners in our area. And yes,, there are still illegal stills out there. The idea of paying a tax to the government is considered an insult to some on a product that they themselves have 100% control over.

And I still feel bad about a visitor to the Gathering last year who mis-understood my local terminology. He asked what I was sampling,, and I said; "Mountain Spring Water" which is a way we often describe good moonshine. The pint jar did have a home-made, sorta label on it. He wanted to try it,, and I allowed him to do so,, WITHOUT knowing he was a non-drinker. He didn't care for it. My apologies again to him!

There is a craft brewery about halfway between me and one of the best Engineers I've ever worked with. We were on the same shift for 7 years and have been friends for over 35 years.
The craft brewery has very good food and some of their beers are decent. They have a brew brewmaster who puts things in beer that don't belong in it.
He brought us a sample of his latest creation and asked what we thought. Dave said that it was different. I told him that his horse needs dialysis... The look on his face was priceless!

Jake, thanks for posting that! It was one of my dad's favorite songs and seeing Grandpa Jones do it brought a smile to my face. I know my dad was singing along and dancing when I played the video.
Dad bought a 1957 Ford Fairlane from a moonshiner who was working with him on a power plant job. It had a 312 V8 with an Edelbrock 6 pack and milled heads and a racing cam. The suspension was built up with extra swaybars and leaf springs. It would go 75mph in 2nd gear and bury the needle in 3rd. That machine could MOVE!!

No apology needed. I will pass that along to him. He laughed a lot about it later.

We used to live in Central Oregon. For a while they held the record for the highest number of breweries per capita. We had a church that was closed, and then purchased and reopened as a pizza restaurant. Amazing pizza, a great selection of beers, and a full selection of liquor and wine.

Read their “about” page. Pretty cool.

Many years ago I was assigned to 'close out' a Nike Ajax firing battery. In the same building was the Hq Battery and the 'medicinal alcohol' the med section required. Two finger in a cup and the rest orange juice was a REAL DRINK!

"There’s also writing at the bottom of that sign I can’t read. Can you interpret it Ty?"

It says; "Facebook-ClearBranch Alice" I think. I know most of that is correct,, except the "Alice" part. I'll have to stop & look closer next time I'm through there.

But coach has uncovered a video,, that I didn't know existed. And yes,, that's the place. In fact,, I recognized one of the faces in it. Don't know them,, but I've seen them. The highway is carefully cut out of the video. If you watch the video,, and when it shows the church from the front,, NC #9 is just out of frame to the left.
A buddy of mine,, (and he's known by a few folks here,) Tyson has property near them. He was telling me a few things about them & such. And apparently,, they fit right in with the Trasheville,, eerrr Asheville types that aren't too far away.
His words; "They are kinda weird!"

That said,, where the church sits,, it didn't get any direct Helene damage. BUT,,,, they are very close to a creek that did damage all around that area.

FM,, I did actually feel bad after the incident.

Blume; You & I can easily plead the 5th!

I would really like to know the story behind the sign. In that area you can't swing a cat without hitting a Baptist Church.
I have always thought of Western NC as where the "Bible Belt" "Buckles", kind of like an over lap. I had a slow day back in 1969; I counted the number of people in the Henderson County phone book with the "title" of Rev in front of their name. Then I counted the number of "Churches" listed. The ratio was 3 Revs. for every church regardless of the denomination.

I think that's the best we'll be able to do when the dern revenuers show up.....

by the way this was what the label on that Spring Water looked like:

My Daddy's first wife's daddy made shine in "Bean Bottom"/"Dark Corner". My daddy said that she hauled the product and could out drive any man he knew. BTW, she was not my mother. Seems the first wife died from a ruptured appendix or gangrene caused by a hernia while dad was in England during WW II.

The southern Baptist Church is the only place I ever visited where I felt worse leaving than when I arrived.

Fire and brimstone, buring in hell for ever and ever. Banging the Bible on the podium over and over, screaming at the top of his lungs, saliva dripping as he condemns you to everlasting hellfire.
