An amusing occurrence at a customer's house

I would have tracked them down and explained to them I was not threatening them with the gun only working on it. I presume they just saw you holding it and you did not actually point it at them.
yesterday I was headed down the drive to walk our two dogs and a young man is coming up the drive... large over weight white guy with a scraggly beard holding some kind of flyer... it was one promoting and asking me to vote for Lindsey Graham ... I took it and thanked him for it and he headed on down the street to hand more out... later I used the flyer to help start the fire in the fireplace while wife and I ate.

I always allow them a first quick run-thru of what they're selling, then politely inform them I am not interested, please leave. When they start their inevitable , "But I have a special offer for you today..." I respond, "And I have one for you. Leave now or be arrested for trespassing." If he still refuses to leave, I pick up my phone, reveal my pistol, and warn them not to move while I call the Sheriff's Office... very few hang around after that.

Now that the weather is getting better around DFW we have more and more people coming around soliciting.

I really hate when they leave business cards on door knobs or in the mail box etc.

Anything 'left in a mail box' requires that postage be paid on that item. Pretty sure it's NOT a felony. Damaging a privately owned mail box is not a felony but damaging a USPS owned drop/collection/delivery box could be.
As I've said before, I worked for a Federal agency primarily tasked with finding and interviewing rural business operators--some of whom were quite full of themselves. I've had the Sheriff called on me several times because of my persistent visits but most of those were just bluster and BS. A pushy Deputy would be given a phone number in Washington DC which in a few cases sent him back to the complainant with some advice about threatening strangers. I've had a gun displayed a few times which generally ended poorly for the operator although I never followed up with actual criminal charges. As a Supervisor, I took all those questionable/antagonistic/dangerous assignments rather than put my employees in dangerous situations. Sometimes, I won those growly folks over and sometimes not.
Just be aware that not everyone who shows up with a clipboard or iPad is a shyster or thief.

I frequently open carry at home. My neighbors are used to it. In fact one neighbor sought me out after a home invasion (and lack of police response, they arrive a couple of hours after the invaders left). She and her husband are now card carrying CCWers.

I used to carry out in the yard... open, or semi-concealed but for some reason have not in a while.... I think it has more to my age and just getting harder to do things and having something strapped to me is just a little too much extra work. Since we finally finished repairing the front porch yesterday my now honey do project is the front yard... digging holes to put the azalea back and such as well as a new walk way.... maybe I'll give carrying another try... my yard gun was usually a S&W model 19 and the first two rounds were snake shot.

Hayduke is a hero of mine. I have used his methods on nonpaying customers when I had my own business. Too many cameras today to properly "thank" people who think they don't have to pay for work that has been done for them.

Good points John,, but most folks do not know to ask for such things. AND,, in some states it may not be a legal requirement to have those items to sell "door to door."

Yes on that but we had them. I worked for National Circulation, 1270 Avenue of the Americans, Rockefeller Center, NY,NY, 10020. That was from 1971-73. I quit in AK and went to work in the oilfields.
