.45 LC with SR4759...

Finally got a little shootin' done the other day with the MP 270 SAA bullet, both "penta" and "regular" hollowpoint versions, (275 and 280 grs respectively)
Sized .454" in deference of my fat throats...(.455"+)
New WW cases, WLP primers, Lyman Super Moly lube..

1.9 Lee scoop/SR4759 gave just at 1200 fps...

22.0 grs (weighed) yielded 1240 fps..

Accuracy at 25 yds under 3" but might be much better from a Ransom Rest as I'm out of practice and was battling bright sun glare with bad eyeballs... :? Velocity very consistent however...

Next up, W296 with same bullets (and 325 gr LSWC) with LBT lube..

. Know what you mean. I 'finally' got out to test some Blackhorn 209 this weekend. If they'd drop the price in half ($31 for 10oz ), I think I'd start using it in general for BP cartridge burning! You get the satisfying cloud of smoke with a 'lot', and I mean a lot less fouling. And very easy cleanup with Hoppes #9 when you are done. Use standard powder measure to load too. Accuracy didn't seem that bad either. 22.2g got me 813fps fom 5 1/2" barrel.

Never tried SR4759. Might have to sometime. Can it be loaded down? I like between 900-1100fps in general. Your velocities are just a little high for general shooting IMO.

I put SR4759 in the same boat as W296/H110 for the most part...Slow burner, full case (slightly compressed), steady ballistics, and good hunting loads....One "could" load it down but personally I'd pick a faster burn rate for that...

A 280 gr at 1250 fps may be a little on the stout side for "general purpose" I suppose but it's not unpleasant to shoot unless you want to fire a couple hundred at a sitting. I think a 250 LSWC gr over 13 grs HS6 for 1070 fps fills that "general shooting" niche quite nicely. For "cowboy speed" I like Green Dot... Both those powders are plenty accurate in my .45 BH...:wink:

Hey Bucks glad to see ya burning powder again. I hear it legal for medicinal purposes in Cal :wink: It's about time you got to toss some of the little 280's down range instead of admiring your casting ability :lol:

I'm guessing ya got moved ok I bet that was great fun with your back. I sure hope you had some good help.

when you use 4759 iirc reading in one of your other post you like to seat the bullet just on top of the powder or do you compress it some?

On your "Improperly" referring to it as the "long" colt...I think Bucks tag line corrects the correction...to "Linebaugh Colt"

I have never tried that powder…

Tried a dozen others—some good some bad…

I actually use it in the 357 Magnum—works real well in a 1984C…

While SR has a burn rate near 296/H110 it doesn't have the same recoil impulse to it. I've used it for years in a multitude of calibers. It works well in a 44 mag with milder recol and very similar sight settings.

Flatgate turned me on to SR4759 years ago to try in my old 10" .44 FT and I think you may be right, recoil does seem "less intense" than with W296 at similar velocity. I used it back then behind the RCBS .44 250K and 225GC bullets at around 1250 fps for some very fine long range accuracy in that old "long tom" and I've been a fan of it ever since. It doesn't quite get as much velocity as W296 but it does seem to give tighter SD/ES. I wrote down the velocities of a 25 shot string of the .45LC load above (then promptly lost the damn paper), but seems to me the variation was only around 15 fps for all 25...My full tilt W296 loads are a little faster but not quite so uniform, regardless of changes in crimp, primer, seat depth etc...SR 4759 does not seem "fussy" about such things, just heaves them out the muzzle the same every shot. I think the muzzleblast is less as well, and my empties fall out of the cylinder...Likely burns cooler than ball powder too FWIW..

At any rate, I think it's a fine and versatile powder for cast loads, rifle or sixgun and you'll never catch me without a jug of it around the bench... 8)

BBD: 22 grs does compress very slightly with the MP bullet seated to crimp groove....The "move" is in limbo at the present... :wink:

Just looked at the Speer #12 and sure enough there is the data for the 300 grainer...

20.3 to 22.5...

Guess I will size a few cases and load a few up...

Got 8 pounds of that stuff from Bartlett years ago and it was pretty cheap...

It has been useful...

Did you find this to be the case with the cast you were using?...

Yes, the MP 270 SAA bullet (mine weigh 275 to 290 grs depending on configuration) seated to the crimp groove will slightly compress 22 grs of SR4759 in WW cases... :wink:
