So would anyone else like to see Ruger come out with a .44 mag GP100? The present 6" bbl would be fine...and an 8" in .44mag would be outstanding! Whats your opinion? Tom

Taurus builds a .44 mag in their Tracker line. It is the same L-frame size as the GP-100 but is a 5-shot. It is also ported from the factory.

This one is easy to carry and shoots quite well; makes a very good trail gun. However, it does have more recoil than my Redhawk.

There was 2 other threads about Bigger caliber GP100s. Clements said the biggest thing he could stuff into a GP100 was a .41

Not to be a whiner but i have thought about that taurus alot but i cant get past the porting. My experience is to much noise and gasses going the wrong way.

Howdy folks,

and, Howdy Tslepebull,

I have purchased and shot four various NIB Taurus revolvers over the last 15 years, and sold them all. I do not have any Taurus revolvers any more. Taurus is not a name anywhere in my firearms collection. And it will not ever be there again.

The Redhawk was the first double-action 44 magnum revolver Ruger made and it is still a darn good one. It comes in 4.2", 5.5", and 7.5", blue or stainless and the hunters have notches for scope mounting. That is the way Ruger does it. :D :D

Bingo...I have owned two Taurus firearms in the past two years. A PT1911 and M44 revolver...bother were junk. The PT was actually sheering off metal from a very poor slide to frame fit (as well as having a paper thin finish) and the M44 had a seriously dangerous cylinder lockup issue.

If you join taurusarmed and look at the complaints section you will see some serious horror stories...

In other words, Taurus makes nice looking, value priced junk...buy at your own risk.

+1 on the SRH. The best of the GP design plus uses round, bar-stock barrels for economy of manufacture. If Ruger thought anyone would buy a six-pound revolver, they'd make a full-lug frame...

The Redhawk was designed and sold wayyy previous to the GP100s

Taurus discussion belongs elsewhere.

At one time Stroh offered a 5 shot .44 SPECIAL conversion. I assume the forcing cone was not up to taking .44 mag pressures for long. I think the gun would need some changes to (A) increase the diameter of the cylinder a bit and (B) to the frame front to allow a larger diameter barrel shank and forcing cone to be used and maybe (C) a bit larger bore to cylinder axis to be employed. The Taurus (and Smith L frames) also are offered in a 7 shot .357 mag configuration which the current GP is not and the Taurus also offered .45 Colt in the past on the same frame.

My nephew had one of those 4" trackers. Easily the loudest gun I have ever been around. He had problems with his as well and sold it.

Not possible. There just ain't enough sixgun there for a .44Mag. The GP is maxed out in the .44Spl and that's with a custom oversized 5-shot cylinder. If you want a double action .44Mag that is smaller and lighter than the Redhawk, get an N-frame.

This is the closest thing I've seen to a 44 mag GP-100, and while not a GP sized gun, I would prefer it to the redhawk.

This is what Ruger should offer. Scroll down to the "No. RD04GP Super Redhawk Alaskan GP-44"

anyway, like most others mentioned and a bit less expensive is the 4" redhawk. While not actually a GP, it is very attractive. Especially since Ruger offers it in the 4" now

Here is another Bowen creation, the "GP-44". I think this may have been
built for a gun writer, Denis Presbrey.
