I am posting this for my brother-in-law and his '94 Winchester. He has some 30-30 cast 165gr RNFP that he wants to load for plinking/or just general use...NOT HUNTING. He mentioned that he had seen some info that uses Unique for loads around this bullet weight. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
Thanks, Jim

start at 7gr. for `bout 1200 fps , up to 10.6 for better than 1500fps

As per Lymans 46th edition for the 311291 169 gr. rn.

I`ve shot a boat load of cast thru the dirty-30 with 8gr. of reddot
Killed a deer with 10gr of HERCO at 1400fps or so.
6gr. of 700x is almost as quite as a 22lr

All these loads are from Lymans 46th

Have fun, be careful !!

I shoot a Lee 170gr cast bullet with 10 gr of Unique. I haven't run it through a chronograph but it is very accurate.

Hi,

I've used "pop gun" loads w/ cast bullets over Unique from the Lyman book for several years. They're good short range plinkers, to 50 yds or so.

For something w/ a little more oomph, I've also used Mr. Lee's formula for cast bullet loads from his "Modern Reloading" book (1st Ed.) and come up w/ some nice shooters using Win 748. I haven't run 'em over the chrono to be sure, but the formula calculates them as approaching 1700 fps, and they'll shoot nicely out as far as 150 yds, though 100 is perhaps a more reasonable range. All my bullets for the .30-30 are gas checked from the Lee 170 gr. mold. For the "pop gun" bullets I use straight wheelweights; the faster ones are Rotometals' hardball alloy.

You can reduce H4895 loads by up to 40% according to Hodgdon.
Take the max load for a given weight bullet and multiply by 60% for the most reduced load.

I have used H4895 for 30/30 175gr lead loads ranging from about 1600 to about 2000 fps...mine shot good through the whole range...I did end up using 2400 for most lead loads and Unique for some really lighter stuff. if you have bullets the will get out of the barrel at 2000 fps without leaving lead behind, H4895 will do the job...never tried 748 with lead, but its another good powder for 30/30.

GP 100 Man has some good loads there....I'd add 4227, 2400, or SR4759 to the list as well. Of the three, 2400 is probably most useful for other applications as well...the idea being that he'd not have to buy a specific powder for just the .30-30. Then too, Unique will make up into some good, useful plinking/practice/target loads. Best regards, Rod

the 48th Lyman book shows 15.5-17.5 at 1600fps and 1800fps...for you information,,,and that is a 173gr fn bullet. Ihave use a lot of SR 4759 with great success.

I just ordered up 300 cases from Tom and have 1000 bullets coming from Missouri Cast. I am looking forward to spending some real quality time with my Winchester this summer. I am thinking of just using Unique since I have a couple pounds on hand.
