I just picked up a Remington 700 (older model) in 22-250. I have several 50-60 gr bullets in the cabinet for the .223 and some of the appropriate powders including W748, H4895, AA2230 and BL-2C. I am looking for some other reccomendations. H380, Varget and RL 15 are on my short list. Also, I see that max COL on the cartridge is 2.350". I have done some measurement with the bullets I have and all would do well with 2.39" or so. That gives me the desired .05 off the lands. The magazine will easily accomadate this length. Is there any harm in exceeding the reccomended COL in this caliber? I had a Ruger #1 in .300 Win Mag that I routinely loaded to about 3.50" due to it's long throat and it loved it. Thanks for your input.

What you need to do is look at a reloading manual...They WON"T lead you astray. The Bruce Hodgdon load of 38 grains in a 250 of H - 380 with a 52 grain bullet is famous. I have shoot a couple of them dog hunting and I seemed to like Varget less than H 380. But I don't know as they both shot good in those 2 rifles. I think its the name Varget that I don't like, but ....Just remember it can only go so fast. That trip I also took 2 .25-06's, but thats just me. A 50 or 55 grain bullet in a stantard twist riflewith a "BOOK" load of powder is all you need. Don't listen to your locall idoits and use it for a deer gun as there is lots better calibers out there for that. I would try a 55 grain, with Rem. cases, Rem. primer. + book powder load. I seat closer to the rifling, but have been doing this for years. Use some type of system to measure your C.O.A.L. lenth.

I used a 80's vintage 22/250 for coyote hunting for many years. It shot equally well with 50-55 grain bullets but my favorite was Hornady 53 flatbase match. The only powder I used was IMR 4895 with same charge for all weights. I was not nearly as experienced then and paid little attention to COL as long as the bullets didn't touch the lands. The gun was capable of 3 shot cloverleafs up to 55 grains. With 60-63 grains, it was a 2" shooter and I only used those bullets for youth deer loads. I won't quote the powder charge due it being over the weight printed in some current manuals-somtimes it left ejector marks when the barrel got real dirty. Like I said, I was less knowledgeable or cautious then than now.

I have a Savage 12FV I converted to a 22-250 with a barrel swap. I worked up some loads for it and found IMR 8208 XBR the most accurate at 100yds. Well, just under 100, about 96 actually. I use a 52gr SMK and a Hornady 50gr soft point. H414 performed good also with 55gr Vmax's. Here's some pic's of some load development I done about a month ago. I was searching for THE load but the 22-250 seems to do good with several combo's.
