AFAIK, they only had 7.5” barrels. Is this correct?

That is correct.
Actually surprised they didn’t do something like that when all that surplus ammo was available. That ammo would have loved the longer barrel.

It seems like a handloaders gun now.
Nothing wrong with that, but I bet that is why they sell slow.

Ruger factory offering was only in the 7-1/2" barrel. There have been a few customs that are different.

I have an OM. I always thought that it would be a more “handy” gun if built on the medium frame. JMO. One could always have one made of course.

Here’s a pics of mine.Picked it up for $500 last Saturday.It’s a 1971 OM also in .30 carbine.
Original owner passed away,and I bought it from his son.Missing rear sight but already have a Micro base on hand and have a complete rear sight assembly coming in from
fellow member,Contender.
The one and only small draw back was the fact that the owner had one hole drilled and
tapped for a scope mount at some point.
Figure that’s why the rear sight is gone too.
Anywho,I asked a local gunsmith what he could do to fill in the hole,and he used a small
screw that fit like a glove and was red
Loc Tited in place.
Honestly it doesn’t really stand out much and
looks way better than an open hole in the
top strap.
It does have some rough places and some marks etc. from wear and time but that’s just
character too me.
The bore is mirror bright as well as cylinders
and it locks up nice and tight.
Overall I’m real happy with it and can’t wait to
get her out to the range once the rear sight is
back on it.

Bought the first one I saw in 1968 or 69. It was also my first Blackhawk. If my memory is correct the sn was 3099. Bought it on a Sunday and took it to a dirt road with steep banks and no houses nearby. Fired several rounds without hearing protection. Loudest gun I ever fired. Probably why I have about $6500 of electronics in my ears today.
Wish I had the gun and my hearing back. There is no substitute for young and stupid!!

Trailduster, I like the fact yours shows some "miles and smiles" on it. So many of these .30's get shot a little then put away.
Their more fun than that.
My cylinder got some attention from Fermin and I just finished my last round of firelapping.
So it's ready to start some serious load development with cast bullets.

Off topic, but from one who has paid the big $$$ for hearing aids, GO TO COSTCO.... get the latest Kirkland K-10 devices for under $1,400 BOTH sides. TRUST ME.... they work better than the expensive ones I've had in the past.... They even do the exams for free and semi-annual free check-ups (oh, yeah, 3 yr warranty).. and they change the 'wax filters' for free.... There's more, but you get the idea....

The Lee .30 cal. "soup can" and 2400 work pretty well in mine. With or without gas checks.

I do not cast but will certainly try some if I run across them.
Being a 32oholic I do have lots of cast .311-.313 bullets that I run thru a .309 Lee push thru sizer though.
Just got done loading some 125gr. gas checked wadcutter and some 130 gr. round nosed coated bullets.
Both are heavier than I've shot before and both with starting loads (10.5) of 2400.
Not enough published info out there on .30 carb. in a revolver.
Hittman, your number #50xx gun, hiit a memory note , as I had #514 a couple of times around and our late friend DaveS ( cherokee here on the forum) kinda got it last time around and put it together with the next years version, the 'prefix' gun............
well we moved on again for the the 'estate' even after the first one was fitted with a smooth 32-20 cylinder,,,,awesome guns and I had another to go along with my 30 M-1 just like wyandot jims guns pictured above, after he 'booked from here in western Ohio....our late friend Fred P., former Navy Seabee , gave us this picture of his friend John was a PFC., doorgunner on a Huey, guess what he carried, matching .30 carbines.......
may they ALL Rest In Peace..........

296 works well in these revolvers.

Really enjoy shooting mine, haven't reloaded for it yet. Using Wolf I had problems with fired cases sticking in the cylinders. A bit of polishing fixed that and now it shoots whatever I stuff in it.

yes, I too wanted to 'see/read' more but alas both Fred and Marsha are gone and he had sent me the pic, guess the shot was from a copy of the Stars & Stripes??? I knew a guy from GE where I worked was an Army Sgt Major and his buddy carried a Ruger .44 Mag Super Blackhawk back in Khe Sanh even earlier........Fred, my Seabee friend was assigned to the Marines at Dong Ha , about 6 miles from the DMZ when they blew up the ammo dump, and that made the front page of the Stars & Stripes, he got out with only the clothes he was wearing. He ran a dozer and cleared landing zones, again may he and all those guys ( and gals) RIP..........Still looking,waiting to hear, for my friend Dale Pearce from here in Mentor ,Ohio he is MIA.........W1 U.S.Army May 17,1971........

Don’t remember you posting that before, thanks. Only in country pictures I have seen with Rugers were quoted as .44 magnums. The .30 carbine Blackhawk makes much more sense as all the free ammo available.
