YELLOW BILLED CUCKOO

Ran into this bird in Palo Duro Canyon today. Showed it to the Park Ranger on the lcd of the camera and he didn't have a clue as to what it was. After returning home The Mrs. determined what it is. Dr.C

Can I have permission to use that? The cuckoo has been extirpated here in Washington (gone extinct) and I think that's the best picture I've seen. Ironically, the last confirmed pic came from a peregrine nest where the parents were feeding it to the chicks on a Seattle highrise.

Bear Bio: Ist one I've ever seen and not supposed to be here. If I were going to leave home to go take a cuculid photo, I would be gone a long time [Roadrunners are a cuculid and are common here] Use the photo as you'd like if there are big bucks involved give me a call . Dr.C

I had forgotten that Sr. Paisano is the Killer Cuckoo! So is this Yellow Billed the "kinder, gentler Cuckoo"? Might account for its scarcity....

Seems to be a lot of mystery surrounding the cuculids. Very interesting birds for sure. DrC

Ironically, I saw a snowy owl two years ago here in East. WA but couldn't find one last year when they were supposed to be everywhere. An ornithologist buddy once told me "throw away the range maps when you talk about birds"
