Which Wolff springs for a Security Six?

I just acquired a 4" Security Six from a great member here. It hasn't been shot very much and is tight as a drum, so I want to lighten up the action.

I checked out the Wolff website and there my confusion begins. They state that the factory stock hammer spring is 16lbs. The trigger spring doesn't have a rating, just that it's "lighter" than the stock spring. They offer 14 and 17lb. hammer springs and I'm not sure if I want a 17lb. hammer spring or a 14lb. hammer spring to lighten things up. Apparently 17lbs. insures positive ignition and the factory 16lb. works fine, so why would they offer the 14lb. if it didn't work?

I don't know if the hammer spring should be lighter or heavier than stock. Would you knowledgeable please enlighten me 17lbs. or 14lbs. for a lighter and smoother action and trigger?
Or should I just change out the trigger spring and call it good?

If it helps, I will be carrying this gun around our place in the woods and may occasionally carry it to town. But it will essentially be for varmints and snakes.

If you really are attempting to lighten the DA pull, then the 14# spring will help. I've never had the lightest replacement main spring not work on a Security Six, but you still need to fire a whole bunch of rounds of different manufacture to make sure this spring will always work. Then get some crocus cloth and polish all the bearing surfaces internally. (Do not touch the sear unless you know what you're doing.) The hammer spring strut is normally very rough, so polish it up good everywhere it touches the hammer, the spring, and the keeper. I have never felt a benefit to changing the trigger spring, so I don't.

The 14# may not work EVERY time, but for a plinking or target gun that's not that big of a problem. For a SD gun you need it to work every time. They should offer all of the springs as a set for a cheaper price than buying them individually. Then just try each weight spring out till you get what you want in a trigger pull and you are comfortable with the way the gun runs for your needs.

If you desire to lighten the trigger pull you should get the kit with the reduced power trigger return spring and 14 lb mainspring. I put a set in a Security Six I had one time and did not notice too much of a reduction in trigger pull. When lightening the springs it is a good idea as noted by Wayno to polish the action to reduce friction. Supposedly, the hot setup is to use the lighter trigger return spring and a GP100 11 lb mainspring. Have not tried that yet in my Speed Six but will in the future. Also, be certain to test fire what you carry in the gun through it to verify it will work! Wolff also offers the GP100 mainsprings in 9, 10 and 12 lb weights so you can fine tune the gun if desired. The 17 lb mainspring will increase the trigger pull weight. I would guess one may use that if they had misfires with the stock setup but Rugers are way oversprung to began with.

Since it's going to be carried, dependability will take precedence over "slick". I guess the first thing I should do is get some rounds downrange and go from there.

The spring kit arrived today, but I replaced just the hammer spring with the fourteen pounder. I also cleaned up the hammer strut. I was surprised how rough the edges were.
