...Of course, only J.R. Ewing could afford it.

One dark night 40mumble-some years ago I was rocketing along the freeway outside Bonneville Salt Flats......

Had a long way to go, it was after midnight, nearly zero traffic out there....I unwound the Mercedes sedan and was lumbering along at 110+.....long straight flat stretches are plentiful out that way....

I saw headlights in my rear view, and briefly wondered ?what?.....amazingly the lights closed quickly, I was vaguely concerned of what the speed limit fines might be....and the thing just whisked by faster than anything I've seen on the road.....it rapidly disappeared over the horizon headed West.....

Couldn't identify it from the shape, too dark/too fast/and too surprised.....

No way to tell how fast he was going, but it made my speed seem like mere idling along.

Ferocious horsepower now days to accelerate to 300 kph in 20 seconds...but the old machines knew how to get rolling too....

I remember a day cool enough for jeans and jacket, helmet. Took the Honda Sabre out for a ride. On a two lane county road near home was doing 60 in the 55 zoned straight stretch and saw 2 bikes gaining on me like I was standing still. I went to top end and at @ 130 was still losing ground at an amazing rate. The bikes flashed by. Found out two friends had just gotten home from Canada where they purchased Yamaha 2-stroke bikes, minus our EPA stuff. They had partially tweeked them for road racing but they still looked kinda legal and they'd wired on the plates from their regular everday rides for the occasion. It really is like that old country tune. The telephone poles do start looking like a picket fence ! I've been to a little beyond 150-160 on a Honda Hurricane 1200 that was quite tweekd for speed. I safely managed to outgrow that portion of my life.

Update: The Top Gear crew gets to take a peek inside Hennessey's shop, where in addition to building the Venom, they're upping the horsepower on everything from Challengers, Vipers and 'Vettes to high-end Italian exotics.

Oh, Lordy.

Well I'm here to tell ya. I had my Yamaha Zuma 125 scooter up to almost 50 MPH. Yeah you read it right! 50 MPH! My bald head was whipping in the wind and my shirt was gonna tear off me I thought. No THAT'S raw power and speed my friend. Then I got to the bottom of the hill and dropped to 45 MPH. That's livin! Bring it on! Don.

Tallbald, I'm sure with a KN airfilter set-up, a smaller rear sprocket and a tailwind, ya could'a got her to 60 ! Hang on Ethel ! Don't lose your teeth ! Here, somebody hold ma beer ! And other jokes like that. But really, 270 ? W O W !
