What model 10/22 does WalMart sell?

Hello All:

I want to get my daughter a Ruger 10/22 for Christmas. THe local WalMart is sold out right now, but the disply shows $197.97 for a Ruger 10/22 wood stock. This price is about $34.00 cheaper than anyone else, but I am not sure of comparing models and prices.

They are supposed to get a shipment on Monday.

Does anyone know the model that WalMart sells? I know some have sights, and others do not, and there are some barrel differences, etc.

Well, I will say this. In our small town, Walmart has come nowhere near putting our one small gun shop or our two small hardware stores out of business. Why? Because they don't try to compete with Walmart in the high-volume, cheap-merchandise market. Instead, they mine their niche, and lucratively, with superb customer service, sound professional advice, and quality merchandise, some of which Walmart couldn't compete with them on if they tried. If I want a budget-priced, bare-bones, basic-but-functional model firearm, Walmart is the place to go; if I want anything even maginally upscale or out of the ordinary, I won't even think about checking out their offerings.

It's not Walmart that puts small businesses on the skids. It is their own lack of business sense and complacency.

Our local bi-mart is listing the 10/22 for 169.00 and Cabela's is listing it for 168.00...

I really did not want this thread to take the turn into WalMart bashing, but I guess I will respond with my opinion. I do not want to defend WalMart, but you have to give them credit that they sell ammo and rifles and usually try to defend themselves to have the right to do so.

I buy all of my Ruger revolvers from local gun shops, and am glad to support them, but when I see the EXACT same product for $34 less, I cannot justify the purchase somewhere else.

I guess if you really want to 'blame' someone for not supporting local dealer shops, you could blame Ruger for selling to WalMart so cheaply. In the late 1970s I worked in a TV Repair shop that was a RCA dealer. A Service Merchandise store opened up down the road, and they sold the EXACT same XL100 19" color tvs for almost $60 less than we could buy them DIRECTLY from RCA before dealer mark up. The shop's owner was appalled, and contacted the RCA distributor's vice president. He was basically told it was a competitive world, and thanks for being a loyal RCA dealer, and have a nice day. Our shop's TV sales went to ZERO in under one year, and the owner did not renew the dealership's agreement with RCA. I guess we should blame Service Merchandise for selling TVs cheaper than our shop could get them DIRECTLY from RCA?

Having said all this, I do not 'blame' anyone, and am glad to support WalMart with my ammo business and this new Ruger 10/22.

Thanks to those who answered my post question about model numbers. I will go Monday and get my daughter's Christmas gift at WalMart.

I can't afford small local gunshops. The gouge so badly that I rarely buy from them.

Ruger sells to Walmart so cheaply because they buy 100 boxcars of 10-22s at a time. It's called capitalism. I love it.

So because the shop buys in smaller quantities, and would have a higher price because of that, they "gouge"?

Just remember, part of capitalism is the wage market...that which everyone gets angry about when US jobs go overseas and who Walmart is so pleased to buy all the Chinese goods from.
Then again, if the little bit more the gun shop charges is a make or break as far as the funds go...make a new gun isn't what one should be looking at.

It isn't a little bit it's like 50-100 percent more on everything. Everyone in the US is pleased to buy Chinese goods if the numbers tell us anything.

Everybody bashes China and condemns Wal Mart for selling stuff made in China. Then most of the folks doing the bashing continue to buy things made in China. Some are ignorant. Some are hypocrites.

My motorcycle buddies bash anything Chinese, hop on their bikes, and zoom away, oblivious to the fact that the instruments on their German motorcycles are made in China. These guys are just ignorant.

Other folks loudly proclaim they are against Chinese goods while they are wearing shoes, belts, belt buckles, and other clothing made in China. Maybe they're just ignorant, too, like the ones above.

I do some business in China. I once bought a Harley Davidson leather jacket for a client in Fuzhou who wanted something "American." Bought it at a Harley dealership. Carried it to China. Gave it to him. Opened it up so he could try it on...and the label inside said "Made in China."

Another one of my clients makes small motorcycles. Sometimes when people see the bikes, they dismiss them as being "made in China" (they are not; they are made in California). Some of these same guys tell us the price is way too high because they could by "the same thing" for half the price (they cannot, but it would be pointless to debate these clowns). So the approach is to negotiate for a "made in China" price and then deride the product for being made in China (even when it is not).

I guess a few folks live by what they say and avoid anything made in China. But I think these folks are in the minority.

Ruger does not sell to Walmart. Ruger sells to distributors and the distributors sell to walmart.

Walmart hasn't even come close to putting our local gunstores out of business.

I support my LGS's. I will continue to do so. I live a half hour away from two Wal-marts, one sells guns, one does not. Doesn't matter to me, my favorite GS (Whittkers) has every model of 10-22 on the shelf and always at a great price so he'll get my business every time. I can trade, sell, or find any gun or ammo available, usually on the shelf, but if not, three days out. That alone is worth a few bucks to me, plus the people who work there are good people and provide service and knowledge. You will not get that at Wal-mart. To me, it's about value, not cheap.

For a while, Walmart carried a longer 22" stainless wood stock 10/22, available (only?) at Walmart, along with the 10/22's you can find most anywhere.

Some called it the "Wally-world special". Not sure if you can find them anymore as I recall they were discontinuing them.

I can't get anyone to wait on me at my local Wal-Mart; so I have to buy from the LGS. I recently wanted some 30-30 ammo, nobody could find the key to open the case to get it out. Finally, the manager came and said one of the clerk's had gone to lunch and had taken the key with him. I found it too funny to even be irritated about it.

I am in the exact same position. The thing is, the concept of buying locally from Whitaker's or Uncle Lee's will have the same chilling effect on sales from the small storefront LGS as a big box store will. I always offer the deal to my small local dealer, but then if he can't get close, I go to Whitaker's, Uncle Lee's, or Dunn's in Paducah, KY. My money always goes to the best value, whether WalMart or "Tim's Tiny shop". If I save $34.00 on a gun purchase I will spend the $34.00 on ammo or whatever from wherever.
