Anyone cooking anything special for Christmas Eve or Christmas Day?

We’ve got tamales for dinner today and I’m cooking a lamb roast for tomorrow.

Actually the lamb is in the crock pot right now and it’s going to be roasted in the oven tomorrow. My wife got a 5 pound roast at Sam’s and they take a long, long time to cook.

We went to get some crab usually we buy it cooked they were all out but they them fresh still crawling around . Anyway we never cooked them before thought we give a try . My neighbor had a great big pot and said to steam them don’t boil them in water added some salt and old bay seasoning. Well they looked great we shall find out tonight if we did it right . I think we did merry Christmas everybody

Crab sounds good! But I don’t think I could buy them alive to eat. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

A couple years ago, some guy on YouTube bought a grocery store lobster and saved it as a pet. The poor thing only had one working claw because of the rubber bands.

Enjoy the crab!

For family holidays I usually do candied yams. These are potluck affairs and there always plenty of leftovers.

This year we are also having an eve dinner with friends so I'll do yams for that as well this is a bit more structured with a menu set by the hostess.

As to tamales we eat them year round. Almost every day the tamale guy goes by. He always sells out so if you are picky about which type you just let him know the day before and his save what you want.

He also takes orders this time of year.

As I am steeped in tradition for the most part, I'd love a change. But wife mainly cooks to make her 88 year old dad happy & I can't blame her.
Turkey, ham, dressing, gravy, yams, mashed potatoes, yeast rolls, giblet gravy, green beans, cranberry sauce, deviled eggs & 2 or 3 things I'm forgetting. I've given up my faves of broccoli casserole & baked oysters just to give her a brake.
She beats herself down doing all that but says as long as her dad is around & she's able, it's gonna happen. I applaud her.

I won't be able to eat it just after the meal, but one treat for sure for later will be a big slice of butterscotch meringue pie.

Nah, I'm not overweight,,, just well fed.

For Christmas we are doing something different. A nice lasagna using Volpi Sausage, big salad and garlic bread. Lasagna was made ahead of time so it is heat serve. We are too old and tired for much fussing, I was supposed to go to a party this Christmas Eve but not up to it after the 350 mile drive to my clinicians in Santa Fe yesterday. Age has caught up with me!

We fixed meatloaf, scalloped potatoes and baked beans last night for dinner. One of my favorites since I was a kid. This morning we are going down to visit with my mom at 10:00. She lives in an assisted living facility for seniors just 1/2 mile down the road. They have a brunch for everyone there and family.

We have a few Christmas traditions food stuffs as well.
Our kids all expect homemade fudge. The 4 of them get an individual tin of it each year.
Another one is homemade eggnog. A longtime family tradition.

Dinners are usually more traditional. Ham and or turkey. Deviled eggs, green beans, candied yams, stuffing, corn, & homemade mashed potatoes, gravy & homemade yeast rolls.

Prime rib roast (6 ribs) last night as our traditional Christmas Eve dinner. Put a 20lb turkey in the oven at 0700 and two 9lb breasts on the smoker. Also a ham in slow cooker. Been busy going back and forth from the gift exchanges/openings to the smoker. Of course both meals have all the fixins. Wife handles that and handle the roasting and smoking.

Son just as he did on Thanksgiving brought some barracks buddies with him who couldn't make it home. We put together stockings and a gift for each of them. This has been a very special holiday season serving those who are serving our country.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Hooyah!

We typically have prime rib with all the imaginable fixings with a traditional Italian fish side dish, panettone and cookies with espresso for dessert.

The cookies (some are plain and boring) have a white lemon frosting, the blue are Sambuca and lemon frosted.

The Fish dish is served cold (but cooked we're not savages) and has in it... Pulpo (octopus), shrimp, squid, scungilli (conch), olives, celery, capers, with a light lemon juice and vinegar dressing. My GF made so much we had it with dinner last night :)

roast lamb
YUM! Lamb is one of my favorites. Unfortunately my wife doesn't like it.......I always know when she won't be home for dinner because there will be a pack of lamb chops laid out for me to grill or sear on cast iron. Love me some lamb patties also........smoked leg of lamb a couple times....that actually takes some skill to do right, which I haven't yet......

Lamb is a favorite of mine as well. My mother used to roast a leg now and then on special occasions. One of my uncles had to sit outside all through the cooking process. The odor of roasting lamb to him brought back memories of bodies rotting on the beaches of islands fought over during the Pacific Campaign of WWII. He was a USN Seabee and was landed after the fighting during clean up. Kind of a buzzkill for the rest of us. I mostly say outside with him. He was able to join us once the house was aired out.

You guys make me want to have all that good food. However, the wife and I bought a slice of ham and she made a dozen deviled eggs, and me with a glass of Jewish wine and her with a glass of cherry Pepsi. It's only us 2 here in SC as my kids are still up in Ohio, so we don't make an elaborate dinner like we used to do up in Ohio.
