Weird NM grip frame

Trying to do some organizing and came across a box of grip frames I forgot I had and this one was in it. Not a clue where or how I got it but was always curious about the brass section at the bottom. It's a steel grip frame and does not have any lettering on it outside of the numbers 626 etched on one side and maybe an LS on the other side. A set of NM XR3 grip panels fit on it nicely.

I wonder if it had the lock in it and some one replaced it with a home made brass piece

That was my initial thought but the lack of anything in the molding had me scratching my head this evening.

I would agree it looks as if someone swapped it in to get rid of the internal lock.

I believe that is one that had a lock and I’ve seen several that I could never find any casting marks in them. Most had part of the serial number engraved in it.

It’s an early production beginning about 2005 XR3 steel grip frame for the new model flattop Blackhawks and New Vaqueros. Current production for those models no longer has that shape nor used the lock.
